Neuware - A story of alienation, love, suspense, and imagination set on the streets of San Juan, Puerto Rico, SIMONE describes a self-educated Chinese immigrant student stalking (and courting) a disillusioned writer. The novel begins with the writer's frustrated, satiric observations on his native city and the life of the university where he teaches. It progresses to the cat-and-mouse game he enters into with his mystery stalker; finally it describes his recognition of the plight of Chinese immigrant workers in Puerto Rico. Traumatized and lonely, the characters move towards bitter-sweet collaborations in passion, grief, literature and art. Longing to escape his isolation and his native city, the writer ends by embracing both.

But as growing populations around the globe continue to flow toward the coasts on an unprecedented scale and climate change raises water levels, our relationship to the sea has begun to take on new and potentially catastrophic dimensions. The latest generation of coastal dwellers lives largely in ignorance of the history of those who came before them, the natural environment, and the need to live sustainably on the world's shores. Humanity has forgotten how to live with the oceans. In The Human Shore, a magisterial account of 100,000 years of seaside civilization, John R. Gillis recovers the coastal experience from its origins among the people who dwelled along the African shore to the bustle and glitz of today's megacities and beach resorts. He takes readers from discussion of the possible coastal location of the Garden of Eden to the ancient communities that have existed along beaches, bays, and bayous since the beginning of human society to the crucial role played by coasts during the age of discovery and empire. An account of the mass movement of whole populations to the coasts in the last half-century brings the story of coastal life into the present. Along the way, Gillis addresses humankind's changing relationship to the sea from an environmental perspective, laying out the history of the making and remaking of coastal landscapes-the creation of ports, the draining of wetlands, the introduction and extinction of marine animals, and the invention of the beach-while giving us a global understanding of our relationship to the water. Learned and deeply personal, The Human Shore is more than a history: it is the story of a space that has been central to the attitudes, plans, and existence of those who live and dream at land's end.

Neuware - In the United States at the height of the Cold War, roughly between the end of World War II and the early 1980s, a new project of redefining rationality commanded the attention of sharp minds, powerful politicians, wealthy foundations, and top military brass. Its home was the human sciences-psychology, sociology, political science, and economics, among others-and its participants enlisted in an intellectual campaign to figure out what rationality should mean and how it could be deployed. How Reason Almost Lost Its Mind brings to life the people-Herbert Simon, Oskar Morgenstern, Herman Kahn, Anatol Rapoport, Thomas Schelling, and many others-and places, including the RAND Corporation, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, the Cowles Commission for Research and Economics, and the Council on Foreign Relations, that played a key role in putting forth a 'Cold War rationality.' Decision makers harnessed this picture of rationality-optimizing, formal, algorithmic, and mechanical-in their quest to understand phenomena as diverse as economic transactions, biological evolution, political elections, international relations, and military strategy. The authors chronicle and illuminate what it meant to be rational in the age of nuclear brinkmanship.

Between 1800 and 1890, New York grew from a seaport town with 60,000 residentswhose food came from local farms, waters, and forestsinto a city of 6,000,000, served by an elaborate army of food-sector workers, including regional dairymen and truck farmers, western ranchers, and farmers in the South, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean. New York became abundant with food and restaurants as never before. Yet its food system was also highly inequitable and notably corrupt. Lobel s focus on the rise of New York as both a metropolis and a food capital opens a unique window onto the intersection of the cultural, social, political, and economic transformations of the nineteenth century. Her perspective provides for fresh consideration of the development of the market economy in New York; the rise of concerns about food quality and access to food; the development of a culture of conspicuous consumption; and the transformation of domestic culinary life. Altogether, Lobel illuminates the ways in which the city s physical and social growth was intimately connected to changes in its food networks.'.

Ajouter au panierTaschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - In this short but ambitious book, Arjun Appadurai argues that the failure of the financial system in 2007-08 in the United States was primarily a failure of language. This argument does not deny that greed, ignorance, weak regulation, and irresponsible risk-taking were important factors in the collapse. But the new role of language in the marketplace, for Appadurai, is the condition of possibility for all these more easily identifiable flaws. Attempts to rectify the social pathologies of contemporary finance must address that failure of language. 'Banking on Words 'focuses on derivatives as the distinctive innovation of our financial era. Derivatives are written promises concerning the uncertain future prices of financial assets and the substance of these contracts is expressed in terms of money. The recent failure of derivatives markets was systematic and should be understood as failed promises. While it is well-known that derivatives pile risk on risk with little basis in real production and trade, Appadurai reveals this process in a fresh light from which some policy conclusions may be drawn. While critical of derivative finance s present social infrastructure and supporting ideology, Appadurai acknowledges its capacity for creating vast new forms of wealth and asks the crucial question: if we want access to that wealth, what kind of social arrangements would we need to make sure that it benefits all of society rather than reinforcing a system that benefits the few who are already well off His bold answer involves not the repair of the force of promises but rather the repair and reconstruction of the idea of the individual to enable new sorts of solidarity between dividuals, agents whose very partiality may allow for new aggregations of aspiration, interest and affiliation. This amounts to nothing less than a new ideology of sociality.'.

Neuware - Collecting a decade of work from iconic anthropologist and writer Michael Taussig, The Corn Wolf pinpoints a moment of intellectual development for the master stylist, exemplifying the 'nervous system' approach to writing and truth that has characterized his trajectory. Pressured by the permanent state of emergency that imbues our times, this approach marries storytelling with theory, thickening spiraling analysis with ethnography and putting the study of so-called primitive societies back on the anthropological agenda as a way of better understanding the sacred in everyday life. The leading figure of these projects is the corn wolf, whom Wittgenstein used in his fierce polemic on Frazer's Golden Bough. For just as the corn wolf slips through the magic of language in fields of danger and disaster, so we are emboldened to take on the widespread culture of academic-or what he deems 'agribusiness'-writing, which strips ethnography from its capacity to surprise and connect with other worlds, whether peasant farmers in Colombia, Palestinians in Israel, protestors in Zuccotti Park, or eccentric yet fundamental aspects of our condition such as animism, humming, or the acceleration of time. A glance at the chapter titles-such as 'The Stories Things Tell' or 'Iconoclasm Dictionary'-along with his compelling drawings, testifies to the resonant sensibility of these works, which lope like the corn wolf through the boundaries of writing and understanding.

Neuware - 'Unsettled Belonging' is an ethnographic study that focuses on how young Palestinian Americans navigated and constructed belonging and citizenship; and it examines their encounters with an exclusionary politics of belonging that emerged out of the routine practices of everyday U.S. nationalism 'inside their schools' in the post 9-11 decade. At the heart of this project rests a question about disjunctures of modern citizenship. Taking an anthropological perspective on citizenship as lived experiences through which people negotiate social, cultural, and political membership, anthropologist Thea Abu El-Haj analyzes a fundamental schism between the ways Palestinian American youth experienced and constructed transnational citizenship and belonging, and the ways they were positioned as impossible subjects of the nation, despite their official status as citizens.'.

Neuware - An engrossing and startling history of Chicago's Union Stock Yard, Dominic Pacyga's meticulous and fresh book addresses more than the rise and fall of the industrial district that for so long was a critical part of what defined Chicago, its immigrants, its economy, its environmental health (or lack thereof), and its politics. While Pacyga knows those aspects like few others do--having grown up in the Back of the Yards neighborhood and worked in the stockyards himself as a young man--he has here unearthed a history of gruesome spectacle amid the flowering of industrial modernity. A tourist attraction, an industrial marvel, and the crucible of our industrialized food system, the stockyards have long been a critical part of what made Chicago Chicago--and even today, innovation continues to flourish there, as new forms of agriculture and industry take shape on this charmed site.

This tradition of scapegoating stretches back to the nation's founding and forms part of a contest over the legitimacy of the religion, both beyond and within Haiti's borders. The Spirits and the Law examines that vexed history, asking why, from 1835 to 1987, Haiti banned many popular ritual practices.

Ajouter au panierTaschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - The most pressing challenge for naturalism today is to understand how to make sense of a scientific understanding of nature as part of nature, scientifically understood. Meeting this challenge requires substantial, complementary revisions to familiar philosophical accounts of both of its components: how to situate our conceptual capacities within a scientific understanding of the world, and what a scientific conception of the world amounts to. Joseph Rouse advances a naturalistic self-understanding by proposing a novel way to think about scientific understanding as a natural phenomenon, drawing extensively upon the philosophy of scientific practice and related interdisciplinary science studies, philosophical work on the normativity of conceptual understanding, and important new developments in evolutionary biology.'.

Neuware - Theodore Roosevelt first set foot into the field as a very young man, started a natural history museum at 8 years old, and reveled in expeditions in the field throughout his life. His adventures defined him--his policies and his persona--and are wonderfully chronicled in his journals and not Elektronisches Buch. TR's constant quest and passion for the outdoors influenced his experiences from the Spanish American War, to negotiations with Cuba, to hikes through Yellowstone with John Muir. Michael Canfield uses the not Elektronisches Buch to illuminate the force of nature in TR's life. He isolates the elements that drove Roosevelt-- his love of science and nature, his need to express manliness, his drive for empire--all of which share a common thru line, that of a propelling wish to act these out in the field. The outdoors to Roosevelt was like a perfect field jacket, which had a specific purpose, and yet which he donned for many pursuits--hunting, fishing, hiking, natural history study. This work invites readers to join TR on his adventures, with Canfield as a guide, and in the pages of his writings unearth a better understanding of what drove one of history's most remarkable characters.
