Ajouter au panierPaperback. SIGNED. First paperback edition. Near Fine with a touch of wear at the lower tips and lower edges in a Very Good+ dust jacket with light wear to the edges and extremities. Stiff white, printed card cover with maroon endpapers in dj. BOOKS SHIP THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING, IN A BOX. Photographs by Aaron Siskind; foreword by Gordon Parks; text from the Federal Writers Project, edited by Ann Banks. SIGNED BY SISKIND on the ffep; no inscription. Siskind, then part of the Photo League, and the writer Michael Carter started a project in 1932 documenting life in Harlem. They worked on it for three years and put a book proposal together but it was never published. In 1939, as part of the Federal Writers Project of the WPA, Ralph Ellison recorded the oral histories of many residents of Harlem. Later, in 1940, Siskind, Carter and Max Yavno again attempted to bring the reality of life in that section of New York City to a broad audience. The war brought the project to a halt. This book presents photographs from Siskind's two projects with Ellison's oral histories of nine individuals living in Harlem at the time. 80 pages; 53 duo-toned b&w photos; 8.25 x 8 inches.

Ajouter au panierSoft cover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 80 pages. Published in 1981. Retrospective collection of photographs. One of the most important and beautiful photography books of the 20th century. The First Softcover Edition. Published in a small and limited first print run simultaneously with the Hardcover Edition as a softcover original. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Charles Traub: Regular-sized volume format. Pristine-white softcovers with brown titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Aaron Siskind. Foreword by Gordon Parks. Text excerpts gathered and edited by Ann Banks from the landmark study, "Federal Writer's Project". Printed in duotone on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. In pictorial DJ with large flaps and titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Aaron Siskind's "Harlem Document: Photographs 1932-1940". His breakthrough collection, a quietly eloquent portrait of Harlem, and one of the most influential documents emanating from The Photo League. "All in all, a labor of love, care, and devotion, worthy of its great subject. The comparisons that have been made to 'The Sweet Flypaper of Life' (by Roy de Carava and Langston Hughes) are entirely justified" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Aaron Siskind collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Aaron Siskind. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a great photography book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Edition/First Printing (Softcover) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: The Softcover Edition was issued simultaneously as the Hardcover. Copies available online have serious flaws, are subsequent printings, or are remainder-marked. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with duotone plates. One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy.
