This book chronicles their remarkable travels, which commenced on 20 February 1584 when they departed Japan and culminated in their arrival in Lisbon on 11 August of the same year. Their journey extended across Portugal, Spain, and Italy, reaching its zenith in Rome before their return to Lisbon on 18 April 1586. The boys finally made their way back to Nagasaki on 21 July 1590, greeted with great enthusiasm over eight years after they had initially set sail.Throughout their time in Europe, the boys engaged in both formal audiences and casual meetings with prominent figures, including Philip II, King of Spain and Portugal, as well as Popes Gregory XIII and Sixtus V. They encountered many influential political, ecclesiastical, and social personalities, marking a significant shift in the Euro-Japanese dynamic. Before the arrival of this embassy, interactions had predominantly been one-sided, with Europeans visiting Japan. The mission was a key element of Valignano?s strategic efforts to enhance the Jesuit mission in Japan. The boys were chosen to exemplify Jesuit achievements in Japan, raise awareness of the nation among European elites, and validate Jesuit accounts of Japan that had been presented since their arrival in 1549.
