The Adventures of Roderick Random is a picaresque novel by Tobias Smollett, first published in 1748. It is partially based on Smollett's experience as a naval-surgeon's mate in the Royal Navy, especially during the Battle of Cartagena de Indias in 1741. The three books form volumes 1 to 3 of the publisher's collected works of Tobia Smollett, edited by George Saintsbury in twelve volumes.The books are uniformly bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling and designs on the spines and front boards. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards and the spines have faded to a light brown colour. The top of the spine of the first volume is bumped with some fraying to the cloth and the bottom of the spine of volumes 1 and 3 are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the endpapers and a few scattered light foxing marks elsewhere within the books, including some marks on the frontispiece illustrations and title pages. There is a small private ex-libris label on the front fixed endpapers of volumes 2 and 3 and traces of a removed label on the front fixed endpaper of volume 1.

A good set in full contemporary speckled calf leather bindings, with gilt ruled spine and red morocco labels with gilt titles (missing labels on 2 volumes). Volume numbers on spine now just blind impressions. Covers with light wear and bumping and some rubbing to joints, but a soundly bound complete set. Text is bright and clean throughout with attractive engraved plates. Some mild offset marks to endpapers. Some previous owner's inscriptions to endpapers/titles. A few minor age flaws - last 2 pages of Vol II nibbled to top corners and with a 3cm hole to the final text page. Also with library stamp. Vol I missing a title page and does not have pages v-viii in the prelims. One detached (but present) plate in Vol III. Vol. I: Frontispiece + iii-iv + ix-xii + 312pp;  Vo. Tobias Smollett (1721-1771) was a Scottish poet and author, best known for his picaresque novels, which influenced later novelists such as Charles Dickens. This particular work is based in part on the authors own experience in the Royal Navy, as a surgeon's mate. In a quarter calf binding. Externally, worn. Front board is detached but present, while rear joint is starting but still reasonably firm. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, binding is tender.
