Ajouter au panierEtat : Gut. 290 pp. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Cover rubbed and bumped, paper slightly browned, otherwise clean, not cut open. - HELIODORUS. Bishop of Tricca, bidden to choose between the prelacy and his Æthiopica, rather suffered the deprivation of his title than ' lose the glory of so excellent a piece.' Such is the one poor legend which serves Heliodorus for a biography. Nor may it claim the honour of antiquity, since, though in modern times it has never lacked appreciative iteration, its invention is no older than Nicephorus Callistus and the fourteenth century. Translated into all modem tongues, this unsupported testimony has aroused an admiration for Heliodorus in the breasts of thousands for whom the Æthiopica is merely Greek, and who have scarce heard, even at second-hand, of the loves of Theagenes and Chariclia. From Montaigne the fable crept into Burton's Anatomy, and thence into every treasury of the commonplace, until, industriously repeated, it has become more true than truth itself. And yet, like truth itself, it is manifestly difficult of belief. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 250 Original half leather binding, spine stamped in gold.

Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book, first published in Greek in the third century AD by an author known as Heliodorus, established the conventions of the romantic novel in Western literature. The story revolves around the characters of Theagenes and Chariclea, a beautiful couple separated and repeatedly captured by pirates and thieves before embarking on separate journeys, throughout which they are tested time and again. Theagenes is captured with the intention to be sold into slavery, while Chariclea is captured because of her extreme beauty, which attracts the attention of men everywhere she goes. Throughout the book, the author delves into themes of fate, human nature, and the power of love, examining how these forces shape the destinies of his characters. He also brings to life the superstitious practices and beliefs of third century Greece and Egypt within the framework of an epic love story. By exploring the themes of love, fate and human nature, Heliodorus highlights their influence and impact on human affairs, creating a narrative that resonates with readers across the ages. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
