The variatio, admitted into the edition now presented to the Reader, are the result of intense application, and experienced usefulness. At the same time that I have, by expunging a great number of needless characters, rendered a complete knowledge of the art more easily attainable, I have laboured (I trust with success) to make the system more comprehensive, and the characters more intrinsically legible, than has hitherto been effected."
