Ajouter au panierEighteenth century map of the isles of the Pearl River (formerly the Canton River) by French cartographer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin. One page, hand-colored, central fold. In very good condition. Later hand-coloring. Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 18.25 inches by 14 inches. Over the course of a 50-year career, French hydrographer and geographer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin produced many maps of particular interest to the Ministà re de la Marine. . He also produced a number of sea-atlases of the world, e.g., the Atlas Maritime and the Hydrographie Francaise. These gained fame, distinction and respect all over Europe and were republished throughout the 18th and even in the succeeding century. Bellin set a very high standard of workmanship and accuracy thus gaining for France a leading role in European cartography and geography. Many of his maps were copied by other mapmakers of Europe.

Showing parts of Lantau island, Macao (Isle de Macao and Ville de Macao both shown) and the southeast coast of Guangdong Province (Province de Quang Tong) to Shangchuan and Xiachuan Islands, with names of villages, fresh water supplies and the tomb of St. Francis Xavier shown on the Isle de Sanciam (sic). To the east are islands "Yong Ngao "que l'on appelle Les Isles des Voleurs" ('Islands of Thieves', or present day Mariana Islands).
