Paperback. Etat : Good. After listening to her closest friends' latest travails in love, parenting, and careers, superstitious bride-to-be Nicole (Nic) believes she has the perfect recipe for everyone's happiness: a bridal shower cake pull in which each ribboned silver charm planted in her cake will bring its recipient the magical assistance she needs to change her destiny. Melissa (Mel), still ringless after dating the same man for six years, deserves the engagement ring charm. The red hot chili pepper would be perfect for Seema, who is in love with her best male friend Scott, but can't seem to make their relationship more than platonic. And recently laid off journalist Nic wants the shovel, which symbolizes hard work, to help her get her career back on track. Nic does everything she can to control who gets which silver keepsake - as well as the future it represents. But when the charmed cake is mysteriously shifted from the place settings Nic arranged around it, no one gets the charm she chose for them. And when the other party guests' fortunes begin coming true, Mel, Seema, and Nic can't help but wonder. Is the cake trying to tell them something.…

Hardback. Etat : Good. This book proposes a conception of the corporate strategy making process that recognizes the individual strategy maker as a center-stage corporate actor. This individual-centered view of the stategy making process is needed in order to better understand the interplay between objective factors and the subjective perceptions and values of strategy makers. Using a large sample of executives working in two of the ten largest U.S. commercial banks, Das examines empirically the dynamics of two critical aspects of the role of individual strategy makers: future orientation and perceptions of the strategic planning milieu. He discusses the various implications of his findings for further research into the strategy making process. The author demonstrates the utility of individual future orientation in understanding how strategy makers influence the character of the eventual corporate strategy. The results of Das' study help to explain why long-range planning is really more short-range than anyone cares to admit.…

Paperback. Etat : Good. A pioneering look at first marriages lasting five years or less and ending without children, Paul's book will be a lesson to those contemplating marriage and a comfort to those who falter (The Economist). What is it about marriage that makes today's twenty- and thirtysomethings want it so badly? And why do so many of their marriages, despite high hopes and desires, end in divorce? Nobody goes into a starter marriage expecting to divorce and trade up to something better, but like a starter home, a starter marriage can teach you a lot about what to look for, and what to avoid, the next time around. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with starter-marriage vets, Pamela Paul explores why young people are jumping in and out of marriage, and what lessons can be drawn from their failures. She shows how starter marriages can be avoided, and why lifelong marriage is still a desirable, achievable option for the next marrying generation.…

Hardback. Etat : Very Good. HISTORY EDUCATION IS IN DECLINE because it fails to provide knowledge useful in the future as other school subjects do. This book calls on history teachers to restore the power of historical learning. Education exists to impart knowledge useful in the future. School subjects other than history identify general principles derived from their subject matter that describe how the world works, principles that can be applied in the future such as addition in mathematics, grammar in language, and gravity in science. These disciplines pass on their general principles to teachers who pass on this knowledge to students. Historians, however, concentrate on describing events of the past. Without general principles to impart, history teachers are left to recount one-time bygone events, most of which have little or no relevance to the present and future. Without principles useful in the future, history is unable to fulfill the purpose of education the way other school subjects do; society has no practical means to learn from the past; and the cycle of historical ignorance can perpetuate indefinitely. Educators commonly try to compensate for history schooling's lack of knowledge useful in the future by emphasizing skills knowledge instead: critical thinking skills or the job skills of professional historians. Other school subjects also have their critical thinking skills and professional practices, but in these other disciplines general principles constitute the foundation of learning because knowledge of how the world works is a necessary prerequisite to critical thinking. In history education that prerequisite is missing. The truth is, history has been supplying humans with useful principles of knowledge for at least 2,400 years, since the time of Thucydides in Greece and Sun Tzu in China. In earlier times, history could involve more than the act of describing past events; it could involve the ambition to derive from events principles useful in the future, an ambition that the history profession has largely abandoned. This loss deprives historical learning of the power possessed by other intellectual disciplines. If historians wish to concentrate on the role of describing events of the past, that's their business. Then the task of providing knowledge useful in the future falls to history educators, because that's their business.FUNDAMENTALS OF FUTURE-FOCUSED HISTORY TEACHING INCLUDEFive basic principles of history educationA coherent and useful purpose to guide instructionFour kinds of historical knowledge relevant to the futureCriteria for weighing the importance of historical eventsFour essential cognitive learning strategies Author Maxwell believes that Future-Focused History Teaching has the potential to restore to historical learning the power that it once held but has since lost; to return history to its rightful place of prominence among the fundamental realms of knowledge taught in school and college; and to provide important knowledge of how the world works that can help students and society to function effectively in the future.Note: This book is not a classroom teaching guide with a collection of handy lesson plans. This book deals with fundamental premises and practices that underlie the work of every history teacher from grade school through graduate school.…

Hardback. Etat : Very Good. Technology, at least in theory, is improving our productivity, efficiency, and communication. The one thing it's not doing is making us happier. We are experiencing historically high levels of depression and dissatisfaction. But we can change that. Knowing that technology is here to stay and will continue to evolve in form and function, we need to know how to navigate the future to achieve a better balance between technology, productivity, and well-being. Technology can drive -- not diminish -- human happiness. In The Future of Happiness, author Amy Blankson, cofounder of the global positive psychology consulting firm GoodThink, unveils five strategies successful individuals can use, not just to survive -- but actually thrive -- in the Digital Age: Stay Grounded to focus your energy and increase productivity; Know Thyself through app-driven data to strive toward your potential; Train Your Brain to develop and sustain an optimistic mindset; Create a Habitat for Happiness to maximize the spaces where you live, work, and learn; Be a Conscious Innovator to help make the world a better place. By rethinking when, where, why, and how you use technology, you will not only influence your own well-being but also help shape the future of your community. Discover how technologies can transform the idea of 'I'll be happy when .' to being happy now.…

Hardback. Etat : Good. Based on Robert Heilbroner's New York Public Library/Oxford University Press Lectures given in May 1994, this work focuses on the question of humankind's future. The first lecture treats depictions of the future that dominated all cvilizations in the 17th century. The second lecture deals with the early 19th and 20th centuries - an age of buoyant secular expectation which provided material improvement for all human kind. The third lecture shows that pessimism about the future has returned and that there is little turning to religion for solace.…

Hardback. Etat : Good. A compelling portrait of the future and vividly relates the big challenges facing the world now.--Jared Diamond, New York Times bestselling author of Collapse and Guns, Germs, and Steel The world's population is exploding, wild species are vanishing, and our environment is degrading. What kind of world are we leaving for our children and grandchildren? Just who will flourish--and who will fail--in our evolving world? Combining the lessons of geography and history with state-of-the-art model projections and analytical data, Guggenheim fellow Laurence C. Smith predicts how the eight nations of the Arctic Rim (including the United States) will become increasingly powerful while the nations around the equator struggle for survival. Like Bjorn Lomborg's The Skeptical Environmentalist, The World in 2050 is as credible as it is controversial, projecting the looming benefits as well as the problems of climate change.…
