Description A handsome volume from the highly regarded Century Bible series, presenting the Book of Genesis with scholarly introductions, the Revised Version text, extensive explanatory notes, an index and map. Edited by the eminent biblical scholar William Henry Bennett (1855-1920), Professor of Old Testament Language and Literature at Hackney and New Colleges, London, this work represents an important contribution to the development of modern biblical scholarship in the early twentieth century. The Century Bible series sought to make contemporary biblical scholarship accessible to clergy, students and lay readers alike, combining rigorous academic research with practical usefulness. Bennett's commentary on Genesis reflects the critical and historical approaches that transformed biblical studies during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, while remaining accessible to the serious general reader. As the opening book of the Bible and the Hebrew Scriptures, Genesis occupies a unique place in religious, literary and cultural history. Its narratives of Creation, Adam and Eve, Noah and the Flood, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph have shaped the religious imagination of countless generations and continue to be central to theological study and debate. Bennett's commentary explores the historical background, literary composition and theological significance of these foundational texts, providing valuable insight into one of the most influential books ever written. This volume benefits from distinguished ecclesiastical provenance, having formed part of the personal library of Reverend Dr David Monkton (1932-2025), whose ownership inscription and Ex Libris bookplate are present. Dr Monkton devoted more than half a century to Christian ministry and theological scholarship, serving as a Methodist minister and later as a Supernumerary Presbyter within the Nottingham and Derby Methodist District. He was also active as a police chaplain and contributed to public discussion of faith through published articles and commentary. Such provenance is particularly fitting for a commentary on Genesis, the foundational book of both Jewish and Christian tradition, and provides a tangible connection to a lifetime of theological study and ministry.
