Ajouter au panierFirst edition in English, signed by the translator Gregory Rabassa on the title page. It was through Rabassa's translation that the novel met with great international acclaim, cementing its status as a classic work of magical realism, the Latin American Boom, and world literature. It was originally published in Buenos Aires as Cien años de soledad (1967). Rabassa (1922-2016) was a significant translator of South American literature, and in 1967 he jointly won the inaugural National Book Award for Translation for Cortázar's Hopscotch. It was Cortázar who advised García Márquez to wait for Rabassa's availability as a translator. Rabassa later noted that "García Márquez is said to have remarked that he liked my English version of One Hundred Years of Solitude better than his own original Spanish one. I can only humbly assume that the credit lies with the English language, that the book should have been written in English and I was only trying to correct that mistake" (p. 43). This copy is in the second state dust jacket, the front flap ending with a period rather than an exclamation mark. Gregory Rabassa, If This Be Treason: Translation and its Dyscontents, A Memoir, 2005. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, publisher's device on front cover in gilt, green endpapers, fore edge untrimmed. With dust jacket. Spine foot bumped, light rubbing to edges, foxing to edges, a couple of leaves with minor rough trimming from production, leaving pp. 393-400 partially unopened; jacket bright, a little rubbing, ends and corners nicked, with one short closed tear, unclipped: a very good copy in like jacket.
