Eastman of the U.S. Topographical Corps, who drew them during the nine years he was stationed among the Indian tribes in and around Fort Snelling, Minnesota. The illustrations include the Falls of St. Anthony; We-Har-Ka (chief); Wenona's Leap (Lake Pepin, Mississippi River); Sounding Wind; Indian Marriage Custom; Mission Chapel of San Jose (San Antonio Texas); Landing of William Penn and other beautiful chromolithographic plates. Ajouter au panierHardcover. Seth Eastman (illustrateur). First Edition. Octavo (6-1/4" x 9-1/4") bound in the original full embossed burgundy morocco leather with a gilt decorative figure in the center of both covers. Neatly rebacked at a recent date with a new leather spine. Most notable for the color plates of scenes of Native Americans, some of the earliest chromolithographs made. Also with many articles and poems about Native Americans, most (18) by Mary Eastman. Complete with 12 plates--including the often lacking Presentation plate and The Landing of William Penn--as well as the Illuminated Title Page plate, the List of Illustrations plate, and all 8 chromolithographs of Native Americans by P. S. Duval after drawings by Capt. Seth Eastman are present. They include depictions of "Indian Courtship" and an "Indian Marriage Custom." Seth Eastman was stationed in various posts throughout the West where he and his wife Mary observed and recorded their impressions of American Indians. The Presentation plate filled out by the owner in December 1852. Moderate to heavy foxing and staining throughout, the plates darkened a bit but still fairly clean and quite attractive. Overall a Very Good copy with early color plates of Native Americans.

Ajouter au panierFirst edition, 8vo, pp. xvi [i.e. viii], 19-298; 12 colored chromolithographic plates, 8 after Seth Eastman; ex-library copy with usual markings, pages slightly browned with mild foxing; good or better in recent brown cloth, gilt lettering on spine. This is the second of the three Iris souvenir annuals (1851-1853); the 1852 volume is unique because the editor secured for it Mrs. Mary Eastman's collection of tales and poetry on Indian legends. While stationed at Fort Snelling, her husband, Captain Eastman, made a series of drawings on Indian subjects, and Mrs. Eastman collected the traditions which resulted in her tales and poetry on the Chippewa and Sioux, Winona and Winona's Rock, Wabashaw, Flying Cloud, Minnehaha Falls (the "Laughing Waters"), St. Anthony Falls and Spirit Island. Mrs. Eastman's writings were republished in 1852 under the title The Romance of Indian Life, by Mrs. Mary Eastman (Howes E-310; Sabin 21686). Stories and poems by other writers are included in this volume, including a poem by Frederica Bremer.
