Original full leather binding, marbled leather with red leather title label, gilt coat of arms on both covers, with the motto "Nisi Dominus Frustra", which is the coat of arms of the 2nd Earl of Moira ( who was also the 1st Marquess of Hastings), Francis Rawdon-Hastings (1754-1826, who was Governor-General of India from 1813 to 1823, and extensive service from 1774-1781 in the American Revolutionary War). Rubbed on the spine, crack at the rear spine edge, the covers are secure. Tidy internally, the text is complete, light toning and marking. Retains the endpapers, toning and a few marks on the endpapers. Pages; dictionary format so no page numbers- as standard, pocket sized.

Mackenzie on 29th November 1783 and the birth of Hectorina on 19th January 1784 to flyleaves. ESTC T140567 calls for a slightly different collation and corresponding page-count but this book conforms to the alternative collation given in the notes of the record. Very minor signs of wear to spine and corners, otherwise excellent condition. Binding solid and text clear and bright. Previous owner's name on title page: "Susan Courteney, died 10 June 1808". Stephen Jones (17631827) was an English literary editor, best known for his revision of the Biographia Dramatica. His New Biographical Dictionary ran to eight editions. In the Preface to this fourth edition, Jones explains that he has revised and corrected the earlier editions by adding one hundred new articles, and editing articles that were thought by "judicious friends" to be "of a length disproportionate to their importance". The fourth edition also presents for the first time the birth places of the persons recorded. As Jones notes, "the expense of time and labour bestowed on this object is not to be conceived by any but those who have experienced the like". Sprache: english.
