Internally very fresh and bright with no inscriptions or blemishes. End papers with tanning from inner flaps. Now in protective acid-free acetate removable cover. Calligraphic text. The story concerns two boys (and their dog) who help a train avoid, not one, but two disasters after the driver and stoker fall ill from drinking bad tea. The illustrations in typically charming Ardizzone style. Ardizzone [1900-1979] was born in what is now Vietnam when his father, a French pied noir had been working there. He did not come to England until he was five years old, and was then raised by his grandmother while his mother returned East. He had been a commercial illustrator since his late twenties, and during WW2 was a distinguished war artist. His subdued, watercolour technique suited the genre of gentle childrens' work he tended to illustrate, either written by himself or others.
