Top and bottom of backstrip have minor wear. Faint stamp of previous owner on front end page. Possibly missing frontispiece. Seemingly a scarce edition of this book.

This copy bearing the ownership signature of British colonial official, Sir Alexander Johnston (1775-1849), who served as the third Chief Justice of Sri Lanka. 8vo, xi, 228pp. Engraved, portrait frontis. It has been said that his visit to Batalha in 1794 influenced his ideas about Fonthill Abbey, which was begun in 1796. The Prince Regent of Portugal insisted that Beckford should visit these abbeys. This copy is extra-illustrated with an engraved portrait of young Beckford, and with multiple photogravure prints of views of these two places.
