Poster. Entrepreneur-generated aerial view looking north from San Francisco's embarcadero, shows (left to right) the Golden Gate Bridge, horizon of Marin and other counties extending to western Berkeley with foreground of Bay Bridge, Yerba Buena Island and an invented Exposition-scape. Appears to be based on a photograph but every Frisco building (hundreds!) has been worked over with pen and ink for "clarity" or to base the "copyright" claim or just out of sheer inspiration. This peculiar b&w graphic measures 8x21 inches centered on a long folio sheet (12x24") of reasonably alkaline paperstock. Item is not from a book, but a stand-alone poster. Not in great shape; it has been creased vertically in several places and probably at one time was rolled, and we see an area damaged with vertical dampstaining (occupies some 2x5 inches of marginal space below image of Bay Bridge's city terminus), the sort of odd damp patterning that occurs when rolled-up paper is briefly exposed to water.

Personally hand signed, dated, and located directly to the full title page by Ms. Chua ("October 3, 2023 Washington, DC"). Dust jacket hand covered in protective archival grade Mylar for many worry free years of reading/collecting! Amy Chua's debut novel, The Golden Gate, is a sweeping, evocative, and compelling historical thriller that paints a vibrant portrait of a California buffeted by the turbulent crosswinds of a world at war and a society about to undergo massive change. In Berkeley, California, in 1944, Homicide Detective Al Sullivan has just left the swanky Claremont Hotel after a drink in the bar when a presidential candidate is assassinated in one of the rooms upstairs. A rich industrialist with enemies among the anarchist factions on the far left, Walter Wilkinson could have been targeted by any number of groups. But strangely, Sullivan's investigation brings up the specter of another tragedy at the Claremont, ten years earlier: the death of seven-year-old Iris Stafford, a member of the Bainbridge family, one of the wealthiest in all of San Francisco. Some say she haunts the Claremont still. The many threads of the case keep leading Sullivan back to the three remaining Bainbridge heiresses, now adults: Iris's sister, Isabella, and her cousins Cassie and Nicole. Determined not to let anything distract him from the truth not the powerful influence of Bainbridges' grandmother, or the political aspirations of Berkeley's district attorney, or the interest of China's First Lady Madame Chiang Kai-Shek in his findings Sullivan follows his investigation to its devastating conclusion. Chua's page-turning debut brings to life a historical era rife with turbulent social forces and groundbreaking forensic advances, when race and class defined the very essence of power, sex, and justice, and introduces a fascinating character in Detective Sullivan, a mixed race former Army officer who is still reckoning with his own history. Signed by Author(s).

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Follow Carl, Princess Donut, and Mongo as they fight their way to the next level in the fourth book in the Dungeon Crawler Carl seriesnow with bonus material exclusive to this print edition! New Achievement! Total, Utter Failure. You failed a quest less than five minutes after you received it. Now that's talent. Surviving in a multilevel dungeon that also happens to be the set of the galaxy's most watched game show has taught Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, that there's only one thing they can count on apart from each other: they never know what's coming next. And this floor is no exception. A floating fortress occupied by warrior gnomes. A castle made of sand. A derelict submarine guarded by malfunctioning machines. A haunted crypt surrounded by lethal traps. It was supposed to be easy. One bubble. Four castles. Fifteen days. Capture each one, and the stairwell is unlocked. Here's the thing. It's never easy. Going it alone is not an option this time, so Carl and his team must rely on the help of the low-level, I-can't-believe-these-idiots-are-still-alive crawlers trapped in the bubble with them. But can they be trusted? Welcome, Crawlers. Welcome to the fifth floor of the dungeon. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Etat : As New. Brown cloth spine over beige boards lettered in brown, housed in beige slipcase. A fine press-y publication with thick paper and fun typography & illustration, several pages at rear to make notes. Fine condition. Laid in are the passengers (generally journalists & industry) who were "clinging to the rigging" during this special train, as well as a schedule of events for the Golden Gate Exposition. Several train companies ran specials to San Francisco during the Exposition. However, I'm guess this might be Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway because the narrator is "Sam Bledsoe" which is very likely a reference to Samuel T. Bledsoe (May 12, 1868 ? March 8, 1939), who was president of the company. The text gives a brief description of each of the main stops along the way: Santa Fe, Grand Canyon, Los Angeles. A delightful item.

Paperback. First Edition. Adelaide, Cyclone Fence & Gate Co. Pty. Ltd., 1938. Octavo, 84 pages with hundreds of illustrations (including a colour-pictorial title page). Three-colour pictorial textured card covers with an irregular die-cut display window in the front cover (exposing part of the title page illustration); slight moisture damage to the bottom corner of the margin of the last eight leaves, with slight surface loss to several pages, and minimal loss to two corner-tips; a pity, as this copy appears to be uncirculated. Gates ('Field | Wrought Iron | Ornamental') are the most substantial and interesting sections of the catalogue, running to more than 28 pages. Fencing is also heavily represented, but the contents also include playground equipment, tennis nets, tree guards and numerous other miscellanea.

Single sheet, 23x82 cm, folded to make 16 panels, 23x10.2 cm. 7 illustrations from photographs, including 2 on outer panels, 1 birdseye view. Imprint: "SUNSET PRESS, SAN FRANCISCO" at the bottom edge of last panel. Advertising brochure printed in orange and black with a four-panel birdseye view from the summit of Mt. Tamalpais, "Map of the Pacific Coast in the Vicinity of San Francisco, Embracing a View of the Bay Country as Seen from Mt. Tamalpais," measuring 9 x 16 inches, copyright 1923, and a six-panel photographic panorama of the mountain from the tavern and summit on the left to San Francisco and the south Bay on the right. The photographic panorama was probably made by California photographer Theodore Clemens Wohlbrück (1879-1936). "The Mount Tamalpais & Muir Woods Railway was a scenic tourist railway operating between Mill Valley and the east peak of Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, California, covering a distance of 8.19 miles (13.18 km), with a 2.88 mile (4.63 km) spur line to the Muir Woods. The railroad was incorporated in January 1896, and closed in the summer of 1930 . Billed as the 'Crookedest Railroad in the World,' the line was renowned for its steep and serpentine route, winding through picturesque terrain to a mountaintop tavern providing first-class hospitality and panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay Area. Despite its popularity, the railway met its demise following a fire in 1929, and dwindling ridership when the automobile could finally drive to Tamalpais' summit" (Wikipedia). Not in Rocq (1970), but see 5009 and 5010 for similar brochures. Several folds rubbed, a very good copy. (#167376).
