Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Near Fine. No Jacket. Book Club Edition. THE VISCONTI HOURS MILLARD MEISS & EDITH W. KIRSCH 1972 128 FULL COLOR ILLUMINATED PLATES. Having just listed a book about Persian Painting I could not help but note the similarities with another book of illuminated iconography. Please find: The Visconti Hours from the National Library of Florence by Millard Meiss and Edith W. Kirsch. This medium-sized hard cover book in its slipcase (7 ½ x 10 ½ inches 262 pages) was published by George Braziller of New York dated 1972 and an apparent First Edition. This is my first time seeing this book so as usual I went to Wikipedia to find out more; I quote a small part of what they wrote here below (with my thanks and occasional contribution): The Hours of Giangaleazzo Visconti (Florence, Biblioteca Nazionale, Banco Rari 397 and Landau-Finaly 22) is a Roman-liturgy, illuminated Book of Hours in Latin, which was commissioned by the ruler of Milan, Gian Galeazzo Visconti, in Italy in the late 14th century. A Book of Hours is a personal prayer book that contains, in part, the Hours of the Virgin, a daily devotional that was popular at the time. This particular Book of Hours was created by two master illuminators, beginning with Giovannino dei Grassi before his death, and completed by Luchino Belbello de Pavia. The Visconti Hours is a classic example of the personal prayer books of the period, which were generally made for wealthy lay persons. It is lavishly illustrated throughout with 128 full-color reproductions of the original. There is a good deal of scholarly text explaining the background to these works of art. Condition: This book is in near fine condition. The cardboard slipcase is a bit dust-dulled and slightly bumped with a tiny bit of foxing on the rear label. It is, however, still sound and sturdy. The hard covers have some very minor bumping to the corners and lower spine tip and a tiny scrap on the front. Inside the book is unmarked and the pages and plates clean and bright throughout without toning or foxing of any kind. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.
