Henkl studierte an der philosophischen Fakultät in Wien, arbeitete dann als Journalist und wurde 1925 Professor für Sprachen an der Universität Tokio. Von 1949 bis 1951 war er Professor an der Universität Kabul, ging 1952 nach Australien und gründete dort 1958 die "Wattle Grove Press". Henkl veröffentlichte u. a. die Gedichtbände 'Ich bin es. Verse von Vererbung und Dekadenz' (1916), 'Neun Sonette auf Venedig' (1918), 'Fernostfahrt. Eine Hymne' (1938) und 'The swallow flower' (1959) sowie das Fachbuch 'Philology-linguistics.
