Ajouter au paniercontaining not only explanations of the words in the English language, and the different senses in which they are used ; with authorities from the best writers, to support those which appear doubtful ; but also their etymologies from ancient and modern languages : and accents directing to their proper pronunciation ; shewing both the orthography and orthoepia of the English tongue : also, full and accurate explanations of the various terms made use of in the several arts, sciences, manufactures, and trades. Illustrated with copper-plates. Originally compiled by N. Bailey ; assisted in the mathematical part by G. Gordon ; in the botanical by P. Miller ; and in the etymological, &c. by T. Lediard . ; and now re-published with many corrections, additions, and literate improvements, by different hands. The etymology of all terms mentioned as derived from the Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, and other Asiatic languages, being revised and corrected by Joseph Nicol Scott . . London : Printed for T. Osborne in Gray's-Inn ; R. Baldwin, in Pater-noster Row ; J. Ward, in Cornhill ; W. Johnston, in Ludgate-Street ; and S. Crowder and Co. on London Bridge [circa 1760]. Folio, contemporary calf boards with gilt rule and gilt fillet edges (corners neatly repaired), expertly rebacked, the spine with raised bands, gilt ornament in seven compartments, black label and gilt lettering, marbled endpapers, front pastedown with armorial bookplate of Ethel Mary Portal and bookplate of T.N. Brushfield, marbled edges, xviii + [1080] pp of double-column unpaginated text, engraved frontispiece, 12 engraved plates on 11 sheets as required, a handsome copy. The first edition of Bailey's New Universal Etymological Dictionary appeared in 1755. Alston (Bibliography of the English Language)suggests a date of 1760 for this second, rather obscure edition. He suggests this edition is a variant of the first, but notes that 'The revisions and additions are extensive enough to warrant this being regarded as a new work'. ESTC 199645, 3 copies only of this imprint: an incomplete copy in Birmingham; two copies in North America (Smith College; Indiana University); not held in the British Library. The University of Adelaide Library holds a copy of the first edition; while five copies of the third edition of 1764 are recorded in Australian collections.…

Ajouter au panier8vo, pp. [966]; lexicon in double column; Alston V, 95; Kennedy 6215; Vancil, p. 12; together with: Bailey, N[athan], The universal etymological dictionary . Vol. II. London: Thomas Cox, 1727; first edition, pp. [960]; lexicon in double column; a few woodcut illustrations in the text of a mostly heraldic nature; both volumes in contemporary full paneled calf (but not matching exactly), neatly rebacked, red morocco labels on spines. A matched set of the second editions of Bailey's two popular dictionaries, the second, rather enigmatic volume supplementing the first, and not often found together. Volume II is, according to Alston, "a supplementary volume" which "enjoyed a separate publishing existence." Alston V, 128; see also Starnes & Noyes, The English Dictionary from Cawdrey to Johnson, chapters XIV and XV.…

Ajouter au panierLarge folio, pp. [1080]; lexicon in double column; engraved frontispiece, 12 engraved plates (on 11 sheets); full contemporary calf, worn, and rebacked with portions of the original spine laid down, with new morocco label; not the most handsome copy, but the binding is sound and eminently useable. Inscribed in pencil: "Caleb Williamson purchased of J. Collinson, Jr. for ? 22.10 mo. 1841." First printed in 1755, the year of the first edition of Johnson, the so-called Scott-Bailey was published to recapture its waning influence in the dictionary market. Philip B. Gove, in "Notes on Serialization and Competitive Publishing: Johnson's and Bailey's Dictionaries, 1755," Oxford Bib. Soc., 1955 notes: "The attempt of the Bailey proprietors to enter a folio to rival Johnson's great Dictionary remained alive through 1772, three years after Scott's death. The dates of the new title pages, 1764 and 1772, precede respectively by one year those of the third and fourth editions of Johnson." See Starnes & Noyes, chapter XXII for a full treatment; Alston V, 175: "The revisions and additions are extensive enough to warrant this being regarded as a new work.". …

Ajouter au panierThe fifth and second editions respectively, together in matching contemporary bindings and unusual thus; 2 volumes, 8vo, pp. 16 plus unpaginated lexicon in double column; [8] plus unpaginated lexicon in double column; full contemporary paneled calf; volume designation numbers in gilt (1 and 2) on spines; top of both spines chipped; good and sound. Engraved armorial bookplate of Edward Conder, Terry Bank, Westmoreland Co. The year 1731 was the first year both titles were published together, and thus the first year both volumes could be bound in matching bindings, as here. The so-called volume II, first published in 1727, and distinguishable by the definite article at the beginning of the title, enjoyed a separate publishing existence from Bailey's An Universal Etymological Dictionary. The work contains an abundance of interesting additions (many from correspondents and contributors - a now accepted practice in lexicography), accents (here first introduced in dictionaries), woodcuts in the text, and heraldic, sporting, military and navigational terms, plus a 36-p. section of canting terms and a 22-p. section of proper names, complete with etymologies. Commercially, the book paved the way for Bailey's next undertaking, the seminal Dictionarium Britannicum which Johnson used as a template for his great Dictionary of 1755. Alston V, 98 and 129.…
