Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : VG. No Jacket. Dagmar Huie (illustrateur). First. The author was born in London in 1870 and first visited NZ while on a world tour in 1900, returning to settle here in 1903. She soon became influential on the literary scene, with her writings covering a wide range of topics, from social issues, to travel guides, poetry to fiction. Blache Baughan's "Brown Bread." is a collection of 10 short stories, based obviously on her own early experiences in NZ. It is retrospective for even a young country, as it was then, with nostalgia for aspects of country life already disappearing. In her preface she laments "that it is quiet doubtful whether in another 20 years there will be left so much as one Colonial oven for a batch of brown bread to come out of." Her views on rural life back then look and many aspects, the people, Maori and pakeha, their activities and its impact on the environment. She died at Akaroa in 1958, leaving "Brown Bread." with its vivid recollections of a very different NZ. This copy, which is ex-library, undated but probably a first edition of 1912, 208 pages, b/w art frontis by Dagmar Huie, with her head and tail sketches to most chapters. VG brown hard covers are lightly soiled, but "Colonial oven" decoration to front is clean and clear, spine and corners reinforced with red cloth turnedover to pastedowns, spine titles in white ink, library stamp to front pastedpwn and FFEP with remnant of issue sheet above, library stamp on frontis verso, stamps and ink codes title page verso, library stamps top margin few pages, text block otherwise VG+. library stamp on rear pastedown. A scarce piece of literary nostalgia.
