Hardcover. Etat : Good to Very Good. No Jacket. In the Power of the Pygmies by Captain Charles Gilson is over 500g to post & 284pp plus catalogue at rear. What is the theme of this book? I'm glad you asked >> Britain is a great nation that has the right to rule over others and when a nation disrespects or is dangerous to the Bri…tish way of life they must be controlled. The Africans, or pygmies as Gilson calls them, were obviously not a civilization that was prominent in the English consciousness, but as Britain is a vast and powerful nation & therefore logically the pygmies are in need of European domination and governance. Herein (this story) is created for young audiences, a sensationalized, subversive depiction of African cultures, totally created by European powers. The Power Of The Pygmies is a blatant act of Orientalism with constant depictions of pygmies, which are presumed to be Africans, as savage, uncivilized monsters who pose a great threat to the cordial, English way of living. << so, now you have the gist of the thinking of the time & probably not just Gilson's. A few coloured plates, book has fox spotting scattered (blame the pygmies??), illustrated board cover. Size: 20.5cm. Archibald Webb (illustrateur). Book.
