He was celebrated across Europe, during the mid-19th century for his amazing gardens and his cultivation of exotic plants, including 'New Holland plants'. During several years of travelling the world, he spent most of 1834 in the young Australian colonies of Swan River, Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Norfolk Island and New South Wales, looking at the flora and collecting the seeds for his gardens. Translated into English for the first time and edited by Dymphna Clark from a 2000-page manuscript, this special book is an insightful record of the flora he found and the interesting people he met. Hugel's botanical influence is still evident in a number of Australian plant names, such as 'Acacia huegelii' and 'Hardenbergia' (named after his sister Countess von Hardenberg).
