"Saturday afternoon, August 7th, will long be remembered by the people in the track of the great Solar Eclipse of 1869. Such a spectacle is not everyone's lot to witness. Indeed, the chance of beholding a total eclipse of the sun in one's lifetime is very small, and its duration is as limited as the phenomenon is rare. It has been calculated that it is only once in many centuries that any given locality will be visited by a total eclipse, and the space of time that any one particular place may be expected to spend in its shadow is not more, upon an average, than one minute in a hundred years." ------- from THE ECLIPSE.
