Ajouter au panierHard Cover. Etat : Near Fine. Near Fine. 4th Printing. 4th printing (Ford-Smith, Folio 76 #1140). Includes publisher's slipcase. Fine book in near fine slipcase. Slipcase faintly scuffed. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2003 Hard Cover. 288 pp. A collection of humorous vignettes by various authors, with contributions by William Shakespeare, Samuel Johnson, Charles Dickens, Winston S. Churchill, the Queen of England, G.K. Chesterton, P.G. Wodehouse, Mark Twain, Dorothy Parker, Groucho Marx, etc., etc. Ever since Chaucer's day, when the host of the Tabard Inn in Southwark rose to welcome the Canterbury Pilgrims with a joke, the After Dinner Speech, designed, if possible, to reduce the assembled company to helpless merriment, has presented the ultimate challenge. The best speakers are natural story-tellers - Gerard Hoffnung, reading a selection of letters from continental hoteliers: 'There is a French widow in every bedroom affording delightful prospects'; John Mortimer telling the woeful tale of a man's numerous unsuccessful attempts to murder his wife: 'At no time did Mrs Scott feel that the magic had gone out of their marriage' - and in this collection of post-prandial treasures you will find the very best of them, from Groucho Marx on how to resist a femme fatale, to Ralph Steadman surreally addressing the Lewis Carroll Centenary Dinner. 'Goodness', said a friend on greeting Mae West, 'where did you get those beautiful pearls?' 'Goodness', replied Mae, 'had nothing to do with it.' Shaggy dog stories, practical jokes, sporting anecdotes, rousing toasts, travellers' tales and risque reminiscences rub shoulders in this essential collection with real-life revelations and moments of history. Among the guests are Peter Ustinov, Jilly Cooper, Brian Johnstone, Charles Dickens, Dorothy Parker, Robertson Davies, Henry Grady and A.P. Herbert. There is food and drink in abundance. There is gentle reflection and endearing charm as well as defiant frivolity. Above all there are stories for every occasion - witty, absurd, momentous, philosophical, fascinating, poignant, and forever entertaining.…

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. The Batsford Book of Romantic Poetry Edited by Samuel Carr London: B.T. Batsford Ltd., 1982. First edition. Hardcover, original brick-red cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. Dust jacket present. 124 pages (including preliminaries and indexes), with 4 colour plates and numerous black-and-white illustrations throughout. Illustrated endpapers. 8vo (approximately 23 × 14 cm / 9 × 5½ inches). ISBN 0 7134 3903 3 / 9780713439038. Includes indexes of poets and artists. This handsomely produced Batsford anthology brings together poems of the Romantic period with the paintings and drawings that so often shared the same subjects and sensibility. The double aim, set out in the introduction, is both to give pleasure through the juxtaposition of memorable (and sometimes unfamiliar) verse and pictures, and to show how closely the poets and painters of the age responded to the same themes: night and nightmare, storm-lashed coasts, ruined abbeys, moonlight, the Lakes, the Alps, and the Italian landscape. Wordsworth's Tintern Abbey appears alongside views by Turner, Girtin and Crome; Shelley's The Cloud is paired with Constable; Byron and de Loutherbourg share stormy coastal scenes; Erasmus Darwin and Henry Fuseli are both preoccupied by the night-mare; and the Lakes, Alps and Italy recur throughout. The colour plates include works after William Blake (Thus wept the Angel voice… from America), Francis Towne (The Source of the Arveiron), John Constable (Stonehenge), and J.M.W. Turner (The Devil's Bridge, St Gothard — a detail of which also forms the striking jacket illustration, supplied by Thomas Agnew & Sons). Black-and-white reproductions throughout feature further works by Joseph Wright of Derby, James Ward, Henry Fuseli, John Crome, John Constable, George Barret Jnr, Thomas Girtin, J.C. Buckler, Edward Burney, John Martin, Samuel Palmer, and others. Front and back endpapers reproduce watercolours and paintings by J.S. Cotman and P.J. de Loutherbourg respectively. About the editor Samuel Carr (1913-) was a successful and prolific British editor of illustrated poetry anthologies, almost all published by Batsford. His other titles include The Poetry of Cats (1974), Birds, Beasts and Fishes, The Poetry of Childhood, The Poetry of Birds, The Poetry of Horses, The Poetry of Railways, Hymns as Poetry (with a preface by John Betjeman), The Batsford Book of Country Verse, and later volumes such as Ode to the Countryside and Ode to Flowers. He specialised in carefully chosen thematic collections that paired verse with fine reproductions of related art, producing attractive, accessible books that remain popular with collectors of both poetry and illustrated volumes. Condition (based on the copy shown) Book: Very Good. Clean, bright cloth boards with only light shelf-wear; tight binding; pages clean and unmarked, with the illustrations crisp. No significant foxing or inscriptions noted. Dust jacket: Very Good. The Turner jacket design is intact and attractive, with only minor edge-wear and light shelf-rubbing; protected or unclipped as applicable. The volume presents very well and is a strong, attractive copy of this first edition. A pleasing example of Batsford's characteristic illustrated poetry anthologies, offering both literary and visual enjoyment of the Romantic period. George Barret Jnr., J. Barnett, William Blake, J.C. Buckler, Edward Burney, John Constable, J.S. Cotman, David Cox, J.R. Cozens, John Crome, Francis Danby, Thomas Doughty, Henry Fuseli, Thomas Girtin, W.H. Hunt, P.J. de Loutherbourg, John Martin, S.Palmer (illustrateur).…

Paperback. Etat : New. Darwin's nineteenth-century writings laid the foundations for modern studies of evolution, and theoretical developments in the mid-twentieth century fostered the Modern Synthesis. Since that time, a great deal of new biological knowledge has been generated, including details of the genetic code, lateral gene transfer, and developmental constraints. Our improved understanding of these and many other phenomena have been working their way into evolutionary theory, changing it and improving its correspondence with evolution in nature. And while the study of evolution is thriving both as a basic science to understand the world and in its applications in agriculture, medicine, and public health, the broad scope of evolution--operating across genes, whole organisms, clades, and ecosystems--presents a significant challenge for researchers seeking to integrate abundant new data and content into a general theory of evolution. This book gives us that framework and synthesis for the twenty-first century. The Theory of Evolution presents a series of chapters by experts seeking this integration by addressing the current state of affairs across numerous fields within evolutionary biology, ranging from biogeography to multilevel selection, speciation, and macroevolutionary theory. By presenting current syntheses of evolution's theoretical foundations and their growth in light of new datasets and analyses, this collection will enhance future research and understanding.…
