Cooper with the kind regards of Catherine Gansevoort Lansing, Albany, N.Y. Dec. 1877". (Lansing was Henry Gansevoort's sister.) Gansevoort was a decorated soldier who served in battle during the Civil…War. He served briefly as Private in the 7th NY Militia in Washington DC, but soon obtained a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th US Artillery. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in March 1862 and served with his battery on the Peninsula and at Second Manassass. He was on the Maryland Campaign and saw action at Antietam. This biography is complemented with extracts from his letters to home, which add much detail to the description of each battle, many of the extracts chosen by his sister. 4to, 335pp. Bound in full red morocco, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, gilt decorated spine, beveled edges, aeg. Covers a bit marked, rubbed at hinges, edges, spine tips. Internally clean and bright.
