Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, fourth impression with '4' on copyright page, a tribute to the book's popularity. Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, top corners very slightly bruised, very slight lean, not price clipped (£25.00), no inscriptions, internally clean and tight, overall a vg+ copy. 362pp. 'A Time of Gifts' and 'Between the Woods and the Water' were the first two volumes in a projected trilogy that would describe the walk that Patrick Leigh Fermor undertook at the age of eighteen from the Hook of Holland to Constantinople. 'When are you going to finish Vol. III?' was the cry from his fans, but although he wished he could, the words refused to come. The curious thing was that he had not only written an early draft of the last part of the walk, but that it predated the other two. It remained unfinished but 'The Broken Road', edited and introduced by Colin Thubron and Artemis Cooper, Leigh Fermor's literary executors, completes an extraordinary journey. Patrick Leigh Fermor was widely regarded as 'Britain's greatest living travel writer' during his lifetime, A BBC journalist once described him as 'a cross between Indiana Jones, James Bond and Graham Greene.' During the war, working for SOE, he achieved lasting fame for his kidnapping, with Stanley Moss, of Nazi General Heinrich Kreipe on Crete. Jacket by Ed Kluz (illustrateur).…

Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Signed by both Mosley and Devonshire. British edition, fourth printing, 2008. Edited by Charlotte Mosley, daughter-in-law of Diana Mitford. Fine in a Fine d/w. In 1956, Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire, youngest of the six Mitford sisters, invited the writer and war hero Patrick Leigh Fermor to visit Lismore Castle, in Ireland. This halcyon stay sparked off a deep friendship and a lifelong exchange of highly entertaining letters. There can rarely have been such contrasting styles: Debo, unashamed philistine and self-professed illiterate, darts from subject to subject, dashing off letters but hitting the nail on the head again and again without even looking, while Paddy, polyglot, widely-read prose virtuoso, replies in his characteristic fluent, polished manner. Prose notwithstanding, they have much in common: enjoyment of life, youthful high spirits, generosity and lack of malice. There are glimpses of President Kennedy's inauguration, weekends at Sandringham, filming with Erroll Flynn and, above all, of life at Chatsworth, which Debo spent much of her life restoring, and of Kardamyli, the home that Paddy built in his beloved Greece. Signed by Author(s).…
