Dedicated, by Permission, to Rear Admiral Bligh." -First separate edition published without numbering to pages -Complete: [8,[10] with 10 hand coloured plates. -BOUND FOR LOUIS PHILIPPE KING OF FRANCE AND DUC D'ORLÉANS (1873-1850) -Quarto (30 x 23cm approx) -Contemporary quarter calf with green boards and morocco label to centre with the crest of the Duc D'Orléans and "Field Sports of New South Wales" in gilt lettering. -Wear to corners and crack to binding but holding firm. -Published in London and sold by Edward Orme -1813 (with watermark of 1811 on some plates) Provenance: Louis Philippe I of France & H.W.Wheelwright, naturalist and "hunter" in the Australian outback. Condition: Internally near fine - library stamp of Duc D'Orléans to title page. Binding with crack to spine (remains firm) and bumps to corners plus wear to paper covers. The first significant work to be published illustrating the First Nation Aboriginals of Australia. This work was produced to a high standard with coloured aquatints on thick paper, and was designed for a distinguished audience. The work gave sympathetic depictions of Australia with illustrations of idealised scenes such as Kangaroo hunting, fishing, and bird hunting. Other plates depict a Corroboree and traditional life for Aboriginal First Nations in Australia. This copy is particularly interesting in that it was bound for the Bourbon King Louis Philippe I of France, who was exiled in Britain during the Napoleonic wars (until 1815). King Louis Philippe was a patron of exploration and ethnographic study, and his ownership highlights the importance that this work was held in its day. Alongside the Royal provenance, this copy was also owned by Horace William Wheelwright (1815-1865) who wrote "Bush Wanderings of a Naturalist" and was a hunter-naturalist living amongst Victorian Bushmen.

Originally issued with a short strip of cloth joining them together in a string, this set "as always" has lost its joints but is particularly clean and unaffected by the "usual" loss of small bits of text where the cloth was affixed. An uncommon set of aquatints commemorating Wellington's victory in the Peninsular War. They were later reissued in Jehoshaphat Aspin's Naval and Military Exploits (1820; see Abbey Life 350 and Tooley 71). Here in particularly good condition and with the rare leather case, complete with its original hinge and metal clasps. (Abbey Life 466.).

This is the second issue of this work with the portrait dated 1814, instead of 1806 for the first issue. A fine collection of Russian military costumes. Gilt title on spine and five small gilt draped-urn symbols between double and triple lines as decoration also on spine. Front free end paper detached but extant - much creased. Rear free end paper also very creased but still attached. Brown paper tape repair to front hinge. Contains 40 beautiful vivid full-colour aquatints of naval and military scenes. Many of the tissue guards are still present, but not all, but most are foxed and sometimes creased or slightly torn. However, the illustrations themselves show only tiny spots of foxing, if any. Text pages are foxed at top and bottom, but the text itself is clear and clean. Ajouter au panierHalf Morocco. Cloth boards. Etat : Near Fine. Second Issue. Large paper edition, seldom encountered. Folio, 46 by 33 cm. 4to. [4], 94, [4] pp. 40 hand-colored plates. The last two plates in Tooley's collation appear in this copy after the address along with four text pages, which are not numbered, as Tooley points out, and perhaps this is the reason for the misplacement. However, most importantly, all the plates and text are present. Tooley 353. The Second Issue is in all respects identical to the first issue of 1818 other than a few trivial details, of which the unnumbered pages is one. The issuance in 1819 belies when the plates themselves were engraved and colored. Watermarks on plates as early as 1815. As noted on the title, "Published to his Majesty, and to his Royal Highness the Prince Regent", and the illustrious list of subscribers, this was obviously intended as a spectacular commemoration of the then recent final, glorious triumph over Napoleon after a decade and a half struggle against him, and the result was a true tour-de-force, for few colored aquatint plates of the era match these for sheer drama and vividness! Spine with lovely decoration, including three vignette gilt figurative devices. Condition: LIght wear to the morocco, with trivial rubbing. Small abrasion (lifting of marbling) of FFEP. Small, non-decorative, ownership bookplate on FEP, in corner. Scattered, very light, foxing, never disconcerting, and cumulatively, a trivial cavil. Plates are all bright. Overall, a beautiful, and exciting, copy.

Orme's Foreign Field Sports comprised the 100-plate main work, depicting European, African, Indian, and American hunting scenes, together with a supplement of ten handcoloured aquatint plates of Australian Aboriginal scenes. The plates in this supplement represent in vivid style and delicate detail various aspects of Aboriginal life in the bush. Later issue, first published between 1819. This was Orme's last great colour-plate book, after a successful career that began in 1794 when his brother Daniel published one of his engravings. By 1799 Orme had been appointed printseller in ordinary to George III and in 1820 editor of prints in ordinary to George IV. "In May 1800 he had a shop in Conduit Street, London (at the corner of George Street), and in 1801 exhibited a portrait at the Royal Academy. In the same year he established himself at 59 New Bond Street, London, at the corner of Brook Street, and published "Rudiments of Landscape", a volume of uncoloured etchings after his brother William's drawings. He advertised that he stocked 'Books of Instruction in every Branch of Drawing, and Drawing Materials'. Then began the publication of a series of coloured aquatint books, ending in 1819 with "Historic, Military, and Naval Anecdotes". Some separate engravings of London markets were issued in 1822, but in 1824 the shop was closed, and he concentrated on his new career" (John Maggs for DNB) as a property developer.
