Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book reports the Southern California floods of January 1916â"a natural disaster that transformed the region's rivers into rampaging torrents, which, in turn, devastated farms, homes, and critical infrastructure. The author meticulously analyzes streamflow data, precipitation patterns, and damage assessments. This book is not only a record of a natural disaster. It is a resource for engineers seeking to design structures that can withstand future floods, and a reminder that seemingly familiar geographic features can harbor the potential for sudden and devastating transformation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents records of water level fluctuations for 85 observation wells in Southern California collected by the United States Geological Survey from 1900 to 1920. The wells were located in four principal areas: San Bernardino Valley, the foothill belt, the coastal plain, and San Jacinto Valley. The author measured water level fluctuations to study the extent of depletion of the subterranean supply during periods of light precipitation and heavy pumping. The records reveal San Bernardino Valley had been heavily depleted by 1920. In the foothill belt, the water table was lowered to such depths that it was no longer profitable to pump the water as of 1920. The coastal plain and San Jacinto Valley showed less depletion over the two decades but were experiencing the effects of increased pumping. This book provides valuable baseline data for understanding groundwater depletion and will appeal to those studying water resources, geology, and the history of water use in Southern California. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. …

WITH: 32x36" folding map of high detail, "Map of a Part of Southern California Showing Precipitation.", 1917. The map is beautiful and in fine condition, and judging by the tug of the memory folds I doubt that this has been opened more than a couple of times in 100 years. No doubt if you wanted the map for display that it would flatten out under pressure--right now the map is folded and housed in an envelope at the rear of the publication.
