Fellowes wrote several novels and at least one epic poem. Her best-known work is Les dimanches de la comtesse de Narbonne (1931, published in English as "Sundays"). She also wrote the novel Cats in the Isle of Man. Among Fellowes's lovers was Duff Cooper, the British ambassador to France. She also attempted to seduce Winston Churchill, but failed, shortly before marrying his cousin Reginald Fellowes. She was known as one of the most daring fashion plates of the 20th century, arguably the most important patron of the surrealist couturier Elsa Schiaparelli. She was also a friend of the jeweller Suzanne Belperron, and she was a longtime customer of the jeweller Cartier.

Rare novel by the… French-American socialite and heiress (to the Singer Sewing Machine fortune) who was one of the most well-known and influential style icons of her day -- a fashionista, generations before that term was coined. At one time the Paris editor of Harper's Bazaar, she was one of the most important customers/patrons of couturier Elsa Schiaparelli -- who created one of her signature colors, Shocking Pink, expressly for her. "Shocking," in fact, was pretty much the operative word for Daisy's lifestyle; as one journalist put it, "she lived on a diet of morphine and grouse, with the occasional cocktail thrown in" (and if morphine couldn't be had, she was just as fond of opium or cocaine), and when it came to sex, "she was a voracious man-eater, who'd steal her daughters' boyfriends and seduce her best friends' husbands." One of her rivals in the international social scene, Lady Diana Cooper, called her "the very picture of fashionable depravity." She was also known as one of the world's great collectors of fine jewelry, and is said to have owned an extensive collection of leather-bound pornography. She occasionally composed some poetry, but this was her first (and almost last) crack at a novel, and it's the sort of book you'd expect a woman like this to write: vaguely autobiographical, witty and occasionally caustic, peopled with characters that are likely based on individuals in her social circle (which admittedly gave her a lot of material to work with), and fairly insubstantial. The book's protagonist is named Claudia; the novel is narrated by her friend Judith, who has known her since childhood and evolves (if that's the word) into a lifelong hanger-on, trailing Claudia around Europe (and at one point to America) as both observer and confidante, relating Claudia's adventures as she demonstrates her consistently poor taste in men. I think we just have to take it on faith that the book's theme is, as boldly declared on the front jacket flap, "Women in the World of Men." At any rate, it's got a fabulous Fantomas/Dracula-evoking jacket design, with a naked woman spreading her black cloak (which sort of resembles bat wings) as a dark-eyed stranger looms behind her. (And just for the record: none of the action in this book takes place on the actual Isle of Man, so I think we have to assume it's a metaphor, or something.). It is said that, having failed to seduce Winston Churchill, she instead married his cousin, Reginald Ailwyn Fellowes, a year after her first husband's death in WWI. Les Dimanches.her most popular novel, was originally published in Monaco in 1930 as Sunday or a Working Girl's Lament, a novella. For the present edition, she added a significant amount of text, enough to warrant this to be a separate book. Marcel Vertés (1895-1961), originally from Hungary, made his mark as a French costume designer as well as an illustrator; he won an Oscar in 1952 for Best Costume Design for Moulin Rouge. As an artist, he was responsible for the original murals at Café Carlyle at the Carlyle Hotel and Peacock Alley at the Waldorf-Astoria in NYC. Mildest rubbing to binding upper corners, otherwise a Fine copy of a title scarce in the marketplace.

The first drawing depicts a waiter outside a French café and the second shows a man lying on a bed and a young woman kneeling by him. Both drawings are executed in black ink, with some additions in white. The wrappers are striking in "Shocking Pink", the trademark colour of Fellowes' favourite couturier Elsa Schiaparelli. Daisy Fellowes was a socialite and heiress to the Singer sewing machine fortune. The association of this copy with the Coopers is fascinating. Daisy and Duff carried on a long on-off affair, which at times Duff's wife Diana was remarkably tolerant of. The two women epitomised the modern phrase of "frenemies". DESCRIPTION Daisy Fellowes. Hardback, large octavo; bound in full pink morocco with gilt linear decoration to boards, gilt column design to spine with title, gilt inner dentelles, top edge gilt; originals shocking pink wrappers bound in at rear. 195 pages. Illustrated throughout by Marcel Vertès with 75 illustrations within the text, including 3 double-page illustrations and 10 full-page illustrations. All of the illustrations are duplicated in two suites on different papers without the text - sanguine (red) and vert (green). Also present are two of Vertès' original ink drawings for the book's illustrations. Vertès also designed the illustrated wrappers. French. 265 x 205mm. 1.9kg. Very good; some light rubbing along spine and forecorners of boards, slight fading to spine; light spotting to page edges, occasional slight spotting to pages; faint vertical crease to bound-in wrapper, paper professionally repaired at the corner of one drawing, not affecting the original image.

Rich, beautiful, funny and clever she was a fashion muse, the editor of Harper's Bazaar and an inventive writer as is evident in this charming work with its witty and quasi-modernist wordplay. The only thing at which she appears to have failed was an attempt to seduce Winston Churchill.

Lower outer corners of boards and contents a little damaged from damp; jacket unclipped, spine sunned, loss to foot of flap folds: a good copy only.
