A facsimile edition, reprinted from the copies in the libraries of Lee Carl Howe of Pensacola, Florida and Walter Greatbatch. The magazine was founded by Arthur Corbin Gould, who was an enthusiastic member of the Massachusetts Rifle Association in the 1880s. A skillful shooter and a student of firearms mechanics and ballistics, he founded the publication which is the American Rifleman today. First issued in May 1885 under the name of The Rifle, it reported on rifle shooting and rifle clubs until July 2, 1888 when the name was changed to Shooting and Fishing and its scope was broadened to include outdoor recreation with rod and gun. Mr. Gould initiated through the pages of the magazine several movements which led to the advancement of organized shooting in this country. A scarce title.

Still a pleasing copy of this work published in two books containing four volumes of the original Rifle Monthly from 1885 to 1888.

A comprehensive examination of Pope barrels, accessories and tools for this period. These long-awaited volumes have been years in the making, and cover the Hartford period only. Stevens Pope and Jersey Pope will be covered in future books. Included in these volumes is a biography of Pope through 1901 when he went to work for the Stevens Arms and Tool Company. A large number of rifles are shown, as well as comments on reported examples. Also shown is a large section on Pope accessories such as powder measures, machine rests, bullet molds, false muzzles, starters, loading tools, lubrication pumps, etc. There is a very detailed section on Pope mold dimensions with specific measures. All calibers are represented. A very well researched and detailed set of important books.
