Later ownership inscription on title, Elizabeth Rankins her book, the 13th of March 1719. Ownership inscription on dedication page reads: 10 November 1704. This book belongs to Henry Rankins. Leaves toned, second half with damp stains. Title darkened around the edges, foredge curled. Short wormholes to top inner corners of 2Jj-- 2Oo. One leaf with a small chip to lower blank corner. Several leaves have marginal notes in brown ink, showing French translations. Binding tight. In good condition. During the Dutch war of independence, also known as the Eighty Years War (1568-1648), a large number of British mercenaries joined the Dutch forces to fight against Spain. While there, these mercenaries learned many Dutch words and returned to England with a new vocabulary, expanding the English lexicon with such words as smuggle, beleaguer, plunder, knapsack, freight, schooner, etc. and a large number of vulgar words which we won't get into here. Henry Hexham was an English army captain, translator and military author who spent decades living in Holland during the war. Hexham originally published the English-Dutch section in 1647 and the Dutch-English section in 1648. These were reprinted in 1660 and 1658 respectively (offered here). And reprinted again in 1675, 1672, and 1678 respectively. This dictionary is the first book of its kind with some 31,000 entries, including names of all kinds of beasts, hawking and hunting, fishing, herbs, mathematics, weights and measures. All of the plates (excepting those on pp. 37-40) are in contemporary hand-coloring. The two volvelles found in some copies are not present, and there is no evidence that they ever were, but there are two ruled circles with several notes in a contemporary hand. [Part II]: [4], 18, 40 pp., with 19 plates by Hendrik Hondius, of which 15 are folding, all in contemporary hand-coloring. [Part III]: [4], 1-18, [2], 45-48, 25-32, [unnumbered], 33, 37-40, 21-28, 47-50, [4], 75, [two unnumbered], 80-81, [unnumbered], with 18 illustrations, three of which are folding plates, all in contemporary hand-coloring. Contemporary Dutch vellum gilt, with 19th century title label, all edges red; (minor thumbsoiling, three folding plates extensively creased, an old repaired tear to the first plate not affecting imagery, pagination characteristically erratic and lacking the appendix, otherwise good and generally clean, evenly and attractively colored probably by the original Dutch publishers as was common). Armorial bookplate (and shelfmark) of the great bibliophile Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex with his motto: Si Deus pro nobis, quis contra nos. (If God is for us, who can be against us?). The Duke's library was sold in 1843 by Christie and Manson. In 1642, the same year of this publication, the English Civil War broke out under the clashing forces of King Charles I and the 3rd Earl of Essex. At the start of the war both King and Parliamentary forces had to rapidly raise and train troops, as England had no standing army. Much to their advantage, some experienced men had fought in continental wars and brought back knowledge of how the Europeans trained their soldiers. One such man was Henry Hexham who had begun his military career as a page but spent over forty years fighting against the Spanish in the Netherlands. So important were his contributions, that Hexham has been dubbed the most vocal English proponent of the Dutch methods of war. Hexham's Art Military provide us with a great insight into how the Civil Wars were fought and how forces were equipped from ordinary citizens at this time. The handsome production is lavishly illustrated with color tinted plates for troop movements, drill postures, fortifications, gunnery etc., most deriving whimsy in execution, and interestingly the original Dutch commands are still present in the illustrations of pike and musket drill, suggesting that Hexham recycled his engravings. A complex bibliographic arrangement, it appears that almost every extant copy of the Art Military differs in some regard, title and imprint, and there can be no definitive collation. Undoubtedly the large folding plates as found here are rare survivals, and the majority of copies lack the volvelles, which were never present in this copy. It was the most elaborate work published in England on military matters up to that date. This the second edition, newly corrected, the first was published 1637 (1st part) and 1638 (2nd part).

The variant with Dutch title page in recorded a unique copy at the Huntington. No copy of either in UK libraries. The work was reprinted in 1642 in England. "Hexham's long military career began when he was fifteen or sixteen. He was born in the Netherlands to English parents in circa 1585 and first served with Vere at Ostend and remained with him until his departure for England in 1604. His three instruction manuals were a tour de force of English military literature and a veritable catalogue of the Dutch contributions to the transformation of warfare in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. . Hexham was one of the most prolific soldier-authors of the early Stuart period and his contributions to English military literature are quite significant. His ties to Horace Vere and to many of the soldiers in the Vere circle is one more instance of the strong conections between Englands military writers and the countries leading military figures." Verstegan's original Toung-Combat comprised a dialogue between the pro-Catholic Red Scarf and the Protestant Tawny Scarf, the latter a patsy for Red Scarf's arguments. Here Hexham reprints Red Scarf's portion of the conversation in its entirety, but rewrites Tawny-Scarf's rejoinders at length to expose the 'many falshoods wrapt up in those waste-papers' it is as a result an unusual sort of palimpsest, enabled by the dialogic structure of the original work. As a young man the soldier and author Henry Hexham had served under SirFrancis Vere among the English forces sent to assist the Dutch against Spanish occupation, remaining there after Vere's return to England in 1606. He published there a number of translations of Protestant works (from Dutch to English and vice versa).
