Ajouter au panierHardcover. 8vo. pp. viii, 400. wood-engraved frontis., title & 50 other plates. 3 wood engravings in the text. contemporary green roan, gilt edges (bit rubbed, foxing to frontis. & title). ownership entry on title of 'W.H.Poynder, 7 February 1840'. First Series only (a second appeared the following year) of this collection of humorous essays written to accompany satirical portraits of English types by Joseph Kenny Meadows [1790-1874]. Among the contributors are William Makepeace Thackeray (Captain Rook and Mr. Pigeon, pp. 305-20), Leigh Hunt (The Monthly Nurse, pp. 105-12, and The Omnibus Conductor, pp. 193-200), and Douglas Jerrold (15 pieces). The work was originally published in 26 monthly parts, in two series. Van Duzer records the book as having been published in 1840-41. It seems likely, however, that most of the first series was originally published during 1839: this copy of what must be a corrected reissue (some of the pagination errors recorded by Van Duzer are corrected) was bought by its first owner in February 1840. cfVan Duzer 82.
