These were the first days of combat in the air, so a number of adventurous young Americans were eager to earn their wings and fight in the skies above the Western Front. Their lives were thrilling, dangerous and, for many, tragically short. Nevertheless, these aviators became the dog-fighting knights of the air, legends both in their lifetimes and since the end of Great War. Hall served with distinction in the French Flying Service, survived the war, and in 1918 published an account of his wartime experiences as a fighter pilot. The second book in this special Leonaur edition is based on the correspondence of another American flyer. John Grider's story is somewhat different, in that he volunteered initially to serve in the American flying service, but was sent across the Atlantic Ocean to serve in the Royal Air Force. Grider's letters are initially cheerful, but soon reveal a hard and brutal war of attrition that inexorably killed his comrades, by accident or combat, until he realised that his own death was inevitable. This proved tragically prophetic, for Grider was shot down and killed behind German lines in 1918. Originally published anonymously one of the authors of this book was a controversial industrialist by the name Elliott Springs who wrote aviation books as a hobby They were only printed in limited quantities and today are very difficult to find This book is the edited diary of the other author John MacGavock Grider and follows his time as an American pilot during the First World War before his death in combat being shot down behind the German lines This beautiful early edition is bound in light blue with gilt lettering to the spine and gilt detail to the front cover It is illustrated beautifully throughout with black and white drawings Additionally a previous owner has pasted in supplimentary black and white photographs as well as a review of the book There is also a letter containing information about the book and its authors Overall this book is in very good condition with clean and bright pages all throughout There is some rubbing to the spine and the extremities of the cover Would be the ideal addition to an aviation collection pp 277. book.…

The book is illustrated with drawings by Clayton Knight, including the dust jacket. The first edition was published by George H. Doran and was issued with two different dust jacket illustrations of Clayton Knight, the above mentioned and one with a dogfight. This copy is published by Grosset & Dunlap, also in 1926. Dust jacket worn and with a chip from the top of the spine which only leaves the word Birds from the title. Very small paper losses at the bottom of the spine and along the top edges. Some light foxing on the title page and the end paper. Inside clean and very good. 277 pages. In all a very fine copy.…
