Crooke reproduces the original title-page of the fourth edition, 1774, of this famous satire at the expense of the great naturalist Joseph Banks whose amorous adventures during shore-leave on Tahiti became notorious back home. The poet creates an Ovidian epistle imagining Banks' dalliance with the Queen of Tahiti during Cook's first voyage. The extensive notes are taken from Hawkesworth's account of the voyage. Originally attributed to Richard Porson or Gerald FitzGerald, but now thought to be the work of John Scott (1747-1819), later Scott-Waring, at this time an obscure soldier in the East India Company's Bengal army.
