Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This early 19th-century text presents a critical examination of Protestant missionary activities in Colonial India. The author, a veteran of the East India Company, expresses concern over the potential harm caused by the zealous efforts of missionaries who sought to convert the native population to Christianity. The book contends that their actions, particularly the circulation of inflammatory materials denouncing local religious practices, had provoked widespread alarm and resentment among the native population. The author urges prudence and restraint, arguing that the British government should prioritize maintaining stability and respecting the religious beliefs of its subjects. The book offers valuable insights into the complex religious and political landscape of British India during this period, highlighting the tensions between imperial ambitions and the preservation of indigenous customs and traditions. Its arguments continue to resonate today, underscoring the importance of cultural sensitivity and respect for religious diversity in post-colonial societies. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

PL 2.5.81. Crooke reproduces the original title-page of the fourth edition, 1774, of this famous satire at the expense of the great naturalist Joseph Banks whose amorous adventures during shore-leave on Tahiti became notorious back home. The poet creates an Ovidian epistle imagining Banks' dalliance with the Queen of Tahiti during Cook's first voyage. The extensive notes are taken from Hawkesworth's account of the voyage. Originally attributed to Richard Porson or Gerald FitzGerald, but now thought to be the work of John Scott (1747-1819), later Scott-Waring, at this time an obscure soldier in the East India Company's Bengal army.
