Some discolouration to the boards generally. Tape marks to top and bottom corners of both the front and rear free endpapers. Page 69 is heavily creased with two small nicks in the edge. Pages browned. The jacket has a number of tears to the spine with loss at the top and bottom and two holes near the centre. Chipping to the corners with some loss. The first impression appeared in July 1943. ***Very good in buff-coloured cloth-covered boards with dark blue titles to the spine. The boards show some marks commensurate with age and handling over the last 80+ years but are generally clean. There is some browning to the top edges of the boards. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good with no previous ownership inscriptions. No foxing. Pages clean. ***In a very good dustwrapper, illustrated by Mervyn Peake, with red and black titles, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 6s. net. The dustwrapper is very fragile and has narrow foldover flaps (to conform with wartime paper restrictions). The dustwrapper is complete, with just some minor wear to the top and tail of the spine. Edges of dustwrapper slightly creased and rubbed. Please note there are two closed tears to the centre of the spine but no loss (please see scans).
