Marks, in which he examined Shakespeare's portrayals of Jewish characters, particularly Shylock, within the context of Elizabethan England. The paper, presented to the Shakespeare Society of New South Wales in 1916, explores the complex and often contradictory ways Jewish figures were depicted in the period, reflecting both anti-Semitic stereotypes and emerging notions of human depth. Marks was a notable figure in the Sydney Jewish community and collected Judaica, lending his voice to discussions on Jewish representation in literature. Percy J. Marks (1867-1941) was a Sydney-based lawyer, historian, and community leader who played an active role in the Sydney Jewish community. The paper, titled "Shakespeare and the Jews," centered on Shakespeare's play The Merchant of Venice. Historical Setting: The discussion addresses the complex relationship between Shakespeare's works and the portrayal of Jewish characters in predominantly Christian Elizabethan society, where antisemitism was prevalent and Jews had been expelled from England decades earlier. Marks's paper aimed to provide insights into Elizabethan attitudes toward Jews and analyze the cultural insecurities reflected in Shakespeare's writings, contributing to the ongoing scholarly and cultural debate about Jewish representation. highlights how Shakespeare both indulged in harmful anti-Jewish stereotypes but also endowed characters like Shylock with a revolutionary depth, prompting audiences to question their prejudices. The portrayal of Jewish characters in Shakespeare's era reflected the prevailing social attitudes, which often oscillated between fascination and fear, and were shaped by centuries of anti-Semitic narratives. The enduring power of Shakespeare's plays means that the debate over their depiction of Jews continues to evolve, with modern interpretations challenging stereotypes and promoting empathy for marginalized groups. Percy Joseph Marks (1867-1941) was a leading light in Sydney's Jewish community, and one of Australian Judaism's great. While Shylock remains the most famous Jewish character, Shakespeare's plays contain other references and allusions to Jews and Jewishness.…
