Contents clean, one or two small chips and tears, small and discreet institutional stamp to margin of copyright page, vintage repair to corner of same, neat manuscript note 'Cong. 2d sess. SENATE' et.c to top margin of title, exterior as new. An attractive copy in a handsome recent leather binding. Commodore Perry was in charge of the expedition to establish diplomatic relations with Japan and it was partly as a result of his mission that Japan embarked upon its modernisation programme. In a long and distinguished career as a U.S. Naval officer, Perry commanded ships in several wars, including the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. He led the Perry Expedition (the present document) which ended Japan's isolationism and signed the Convention of Kanagawa between Japan and the United States in 1854. He pioneered an apprentice system which establish the curriculum at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, and championed the new steam engine which modernised the navy and led to the moniker "Father of the Steam Navy" Sabin 30968. Perry was appointed commander of a naval expedition to Japan, with orders to induce the Japanese government to enter into diplomatic relations with the United States. Perry believed that the only way to force Japan to abandon her isolationist foreign policy was through a display of super…ior naval force. After his entry into Araga Harbor on July 8, 1853, the Japanese were eventually compelled to accept a treaty stipulating better treatment of shipwrecked seamen and opening the ports of Hakodate and Shimoda. The most significant result, however, was that Perry?s visit contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the subsequent modernization of Japan. Francis Lister Hawks, the editor of this work, was rector of Calvary Church in New York City. Commodore Perry declined to write the official report of the expedition, underrating his own literary skills. Hawks was then engaged as editor and the two worked together to prepare the report, using a number of journals written by men on the voyage. Journalist Bayard Taylor (q.v.) accompanied this expedition for a part of the time, and his papers were among those used in the preparation of this report.? Perry's expedition (1852-4) had been given the task (as outlined in President's letter) of establishing diplomatic and trade relations with Japan, effectively beginning a process of "opening" Japan to the West.

In the foreground two men are abasing themselves before a passing noble or priest. Perry visited Shimoda in April 1854, staying for three weeks and as his account bears witness was much impressed by the traditional way of life.
