Paperback octavo, very good condition, card covers (with flaps), black & white drawings, spine minimally faded, edges & inside covers minimally foxed, minor edgewear, owner's written name. 86 pp. The journal of Samuel Smith, a seaman aboard the 'Investigator', under the command of Matthew Flinders, which sailed in 1801 from England to Port Jackson, exploring the unknown south coast of Australia. This is the only below-the-deck account of this historic voyage, hitherto unpublished in full. Flinders then circumnavigated Australia for the first time. Smith then sailed with Flinders on the 'Porpoise', which was shipwrecked off the Queensland coast. Edited with an introduction by Peter Monteath, Flinders University.
