The goal of Christian ethics in any community is to glorify God. Many people in Rehoboth would agree with that statement, in principle. However, as Heinz Mouton's research shows, Pentecostal and mainline Protestant preachers in Rehoboth offer little-to-no ethical application of key passages, such as Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. Mouton argues that this, in part, explains why the lifestyles of many Rehoboth Christians differ significantly from the ethical values of God's Kingdom recorded in the New Testament. His plea to the Rehoboth church, therefore, is for stronger teaching and preaching that emphasises the ethics of Christ's Kingdom, and how they touch all aspects of human relationships: from the workplace, to the neighbourhood, to the family home.…

While many traditional mainline denominations struggle to raise the funds they need for their various ministries, prosperity type churches and Pentecostal church bodies seem to flourish financially in Namibia. Some people are quick to point out that the main reason for this phenomenon lies in the churches' differing attitude towards the concept of tithing. While tithing plays a central role in Pentecostal and prosperity churches, most Protestant denominations rely on other ways of funding.In his paper, Thorsten Prill gives a critical overview of the various methods Namibian churches use to raise funds. These methods include collections, membership fees, fundraising events, commercial activities and investment trusts as well as encouraging members to give a tenth of the income to the church.In a second paper, Johann van Wyk examines the concept of tithing from a biblical perspective. He demonstrates that New Testament teachings do not support the claim that Christians are obliged to tithe. There are, however, a number of helpful biblical principles of giving which Namibian churches should apply. Most importantly, van Wyk argues, that giving in Namibian churches needs to become a matter of the heart; giving must be driven by love and grace.…

This eruption of xenophobic violence against millions of fellow Southern Africans was unheard of. Some authors have claimed that stereotyping and vilifying language in the Bible contributed to these xenophobic attacks. In this research paper Thorsten Prill shows that the biblical teaching actually rejects racism and promotes acceptance beyond ethnic and social boundaries. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of what the Bible has to say about migrants and strangers and to encourage Christians to live accordingly and to promote the biblical view in their local communities and beyond. Dr Thorsten Prill lectures in missiology, systematic theology and practical theology at Namibia Evangelical Theological Seminary (NETS), Windhoek. Many Namibian church leaders tend to be appointed based on elements of both ascribed and achieved status, such as family origin, tribal background, gender, political affiliation, education or the roles they play in the business world or local government. By analysing the two lists of leadership qualifications for elders and overseers in the Pastoral Epistles (Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9) Christa Biwa demonstrates that such particularism is faulty. The criteria that mattered most to the apostle Paul and the early church were character and spiritual maturity. Church leaders, Paul¿s lists show, need to be people of integrity. As such they are patient, gracious and quick to forgive. They do not fall into the trap of materialism and never look for a fight. As people of integrity church leaders listen to the advice of others and treat the members of their churches with respect. The social status of their fellow believers does not influence their decisions. They can control themselves and love whatever is good. These are just some of the character traits Christa Biwa identifies, and which church leaders need to possess or strive for. Where these traits are missing, Biwa claims, the ramifications are many and widespread. Ethical misconduct by church leaders usually has an impact not only on individuals and their families but also on the local congregation, the wider church and the leaders¿ spouses and children. Therefore, like the apostle Paul and the early church, Christa Biwa argues, Namibian churches need to take the selection of their pastors, elders and bishops seriously. However, Christian mission in Africa was never an exclusively Western enterprise. On the contrary, as Blessing Chishanu and Thorsten Prill in their articles on African Initiated Churches and African pioneer missionaries show, African Christians made significant contributions to the growth of the African church. That Western missionaries even hindered that kind of growth at times is demonstrated by Anthony Brendell who compares the approaches of two European mission societies. While the Finnish Missionary Society that worked among the Ovambo people in the north of Namibia fostered indigenous church leadership, the majority of Rhenish missionaries from Germany struggled to transfer the work to Herero, Nama and Baster Christians in the central and southern parts of the country.The same kind of ambivalence can be seen in the treatment of African women by Western Protestant missionaries in Southern Africa. Thorsten Prill shows that the role missionaries played as catalysts for the liberation of African women was rather complex. Some missionaries played their part in the subordination of women. Others, however, promoted gender equality by providing refuge, education and opportunities for African women to become decision-makers and agents of change. In his final article, Thorsten Prill identifies both the lack of cross-cultural training and first-hand cross-cultural experience as the main reasons for the mistakes many Protestant missionaries made in Africa in the second half of the 19th century. Because of their deficiencies in cultural intelligence missionaries underestimated cultural barriers which resulted in misunderstanding and miscommunication between them and the indigenous African population.…

There are aspects of Finnish culture and living conditions that present unique challenges to African Christians who engage in evangelism and church planting. However, there are also many opportunities for them to reach out to both expatriate and indigenous communities in the land of sisu. Furthermore, it looks at the difference the biblical gospel makes in our lives and calls us back to the cross of Christ as our only hope. The second part of this book examines the complex issues of submission, authority and accountability in the various relationships that exist whenever a missionary goes out to serve God and His Church.
