In the 1870s he entered Otago politics, representing a number of electorates. In later life he began to record the gold fields' histories, creating a first-hand record of this important golden era for Otago, and NZ generally. This book was first published in 1887 with this first reprint (by the original publisher) in 1962. when the centennials of the gold strikes were being recalled.
