Während im deutschsprachigen Raum zwischen Literaturkritik (als Sonderform journalistischer Auseinandersetzung mit Gegenwartsliteratur) und Literaturwissenschaft (als systematische, analytische und historisierende Auseinandersetzung mit Werken aller Epochen) unterschieden wird, kennt man im romanischen und anglo-amerikanischen Sprachraum diese trennscharfe Unterscheidung nicht: literary criticism bzw. critique littéraire bezeichnen beide Disziplinen. Unklar war bislang, wieso es zu einer solchen Unterscheidung kam. Mögliche Antworten liefert die Hinterfragung der Entstehungsbedingungen der Literaturkritik um 1700, etwa in der gelehrten Streitkultur, in der programmatischen Verbindung von Moralphilosophie und Geschmack nach Shaftesbury oder in der Rationalisierung der Ästhetik nach Pope.
