The author joined the Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve as a sub-lieutenant to train in anti-submarine warfare at HMAS Rushcutter in NSW. His first appointment was to HMS Bluebell, a flower class corvette. After 15 months in the battle of the Atlantic he joined the RN midget submarine flotilla at its imception and saw action in Atlantic and the Pacific before his discharge in September 1945 with both British and American decorations.
