Prior to demobilisation he spent 6 months in 113 Australian General Hospital undergoing treatment for amoebic dysentery. There he met ex-POWs of the Japanese and determined to assist them in any way he could. In 1947 he began medical studies. Size: 4to.

The author was a veteran of WWII, and after he returned he began medical studies in 1947. In 1967 he gained a post graduate degree in psychiatry and worked in various mental institutions including Callan Park. He had a deep involvement in military psychiatry (including dealing with post traumatic stress cases) including a tour to Vietnam to treat battle-damaged men. A large segment of this memoir deals with his work with patients from past wars, and throughout the reader sees how events in his earier years, particularly his own experiences in the Pacific War, influenced his later life and impacted on his treatment of his patients.
