Overall an excellent copy. Australia is fortunate in that its history of discovery, exploration and settlement by Europeans is documented from the beginning. Some documentation is indeed fragmentary, which adds fascinating when reconstruction, like a giant jigsaw, the story of the beginning of the nation of Australia. This book is an attempt to piece together that story which began thousands of years ago when Pythagorus calculated that a South Island must exist to maintain the Equilibrium of the earth. The story of the eventual discovery of the World's Largest Island unfolds with account of many Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch attempts to discover and chart the coast, the ships which met their doom on it's reef - Riddles shores, climaxing with the settlement of the Island by the British - more an attempt to keep the French out as they had no plans or need to open up the vast area of Outback Australia beyond their penal colony at Sydney Cove.
