Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition of this documentary record of the inaugural Vision 65 congress, held at the Carbondale campus of Southern Illinois University, October 21-23, 1965—an unusually consequential gathering of designers, artists, educators and theorists concerned with the rapidly changing nature of human communication. 8vo (7" x 9.75"), printed wrappers, 280 pages. Published in 1966 by the International Center for the Typographic Arts in cooperation with Southern Illinois University. Participants included Will Burtin, R. Buckminster Fuller, Max Bill, Masaru Katsumi, Eugenio Carmi, Willem Sandberg, Stan VanDerBeek, Herbert Spencer, Bruce Mackenzie, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Wim Crouwel, Franco Grignani, Marshall McLuhan and Robert Osborn, among others. The congress brought the international graphic-design establishment into direct conversation with communications theory, experimental cinema, electronic media, cybernetics, environmental thought and the social responsibilities of design. Its subjects—the cultural effects of mass communication, the accelerating production of images, the relationship between information and technology, and the changing role of the designer—give the proceedings a remarkably prescient character. The volume preserves the addresses and discussions alongside the conference program, providing an unusually immediate account of a formative moment when modernist design confronted the emerging electronic culture. Light rubbing and chipping to extremities. Creasing to spine and bottom corners of wrappers. One leaf loose but present (pp 189-190); binding otherwise sound. Conspicuously scarce. A substantial and important primary document of postwar graphic design and communications history.…

Card covers, stapled spine. Etat : Good. 25 x 25cm good, red card-covered catalogue, some minor surface wear to original embossed covers, designed by Will Burtin with transparent pages, various stocks, black and white plus colour reproductions. Graphic Designer William Burtin s ground-breaking 1960s exhibition Visual Aspects of Science visualised microbiology and medical facts through models and diagrams. It was commissioned by Upjohn Pharmaceuticals, and found a second life in touring from the US to American Pavilion, Italia 61 (Turin, 1961), Stedelijk Museum, (Amsterdam, 1962), before continuing to the Royal College of Art (London, 1963), and Palais de la DecouvÈrte (Paris, c.1964) This paper takes as its starting point the RCA version with fifty exhibits (RCA Gulbenkian Galleries, Kensington Gore, London, 8th October 2nd November 1963). It was co-sponsored by the RCA, The Royal Society of Science, and the United States Embassy. The exhibition s displays included a working model of audio-visual mechanisms in the brain, images of atomic structure and energy (Uranium Atom), and images and models of metabolic processes and cells. The German designer was known for interrelating design and scientific concepts within his exhibits. He was an influential designer, educator, and theorist in Germany and the United States.…

Pamphlet. Etat : Used. While it's always nice to see what can be done with few resources, it can be pleasant, too, to see what can be done when a book is funded by Kodak, IBM, Upjohn, and Union Carbide. Cha-Ching! Still, Will Burtin did not go overboard. He still made a spectacular thing with graphic efficiency. Sure, photographs by Ezra Stoller made his work easy, but sixty years later when we can do anything they can do without nearly the effort or drama, this one shows that taste, knowledge, and skill are still the most valuable resources. Weirdly uncommon. More science from Will Burtin» Cover worn and scuffed, but interior very good. Some yellowing as would be expected on coated paper of this age. 454.…
