Neuware -A book on any mathematical subject beyond the textbook level is of little value unless it contains new ideas and new perspectives. Of course it helps to include new results, provided that they give the reader new insights and are presented along with known old results in a clear exposition. It is with this philosophy that the author writes this volume. The two subjects, Dirichlet series and modular forms, are traditional subjects, but here Goro Shimura treats them in both orthodox and unorthodox ways. Regardless of the unorthodox treatment, the author has made the book accessible to those who are not familiar with such topics, by including plenty of expository material. The book contains never before published elementary proofs. It is self-contained, and suitable for use in a classroom setting.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 156 pp. Englisch.

The six Chapters are written by internationally recognized experts in these areas and address both fundamental and practical aspects of several existing or emerging key electrochemical technologies. The Chapter by R. Adzic, N. Marinkovic and M. Vukmirovic provides a lucid and authoritative treatment of the electrochemistry and electrocatalysis of Ruthenium, a key element for the devel- ment of efficient electrodes for polymer electrolyte (PEM) fuel cells. Starting from fundamental surface science studies and interfacial considerations, this up-to-date review by some of the pioneers in this field, provides a deep insight in the complex catalytic-electrocatalytic phenomena occurring at the interfaces of PEM fuel cell electrodes and a comprehensive treatment of recent developments in this extremely important field. Several recent breakthroughs in the design of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anodes and cathodes are described in the Chapter of H. Uchida and M. Watanabe. The authors, who have pioneered several of these developments, provide a lucid presentation d- cribing how careful fundamental investigations of interfacial electrocatalytic anode and cathode phenomena lead to novel electrode compositions and microstructures and to significant practical advances of SOFC anode and cathode stability and enhanced electrocatalysis. 436 pp. Englisch.

The volumes are aimed at all individuals with interests in hearing research including advanced graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and clinical investigators. The volumes are intended to introduce new investigators to important aspects of hearing science and to help established investigators to better understand the fundamental theories and data in fields of hearing that they may not normally follow closely. Each volume presents a particular topic comprehensively, and each serves as a synthetic overview and guide to the literature. As such, the chapters present neither exhaustive data reviews nor original research that has not yet appeared in peer-reviewed journals. The volumes focus on topics that have developed a solid data and conceptual foundation rather than on those for which a literature is only beginning to develop. New research areas will be covered on a timely basis in the series as they begin to mature. 368 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Immune responses at mucosal surfaces play a major role in host mucosal defense against microbial pathogens and in the pathogenesis of acute and chronic mucosal inflammatory diseases. This volume draws on a broad spectrum of molecular biologic, biochemical, and immunogenetic approaches in combination with human and murine in vitro cell culture and in vivo model systems to address questions in mucosal immunity. Humans produce more immunoglobulin A (IgA) than all other antibody isotypes combined, most of which is rapidly transported into the external secretions bathing mucous membranes. It has been estimated that more than 3 grams of IgA are transported daily into mucosal secretions, carrying out a wide range of antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory functions. IgA is the second most abundant class of antibody in the bloodstream, contributing to systemic as well as secretory immunity. Recent advances in human genomics, gene regulation, structural biology, cell signaling, and immunobiology have greatly enhanced our understanding of this important class of antibody. This book is designed to serve as a concise reference of the present knowledge of the biology of IgA, including structure of IgA and its interaction with Fc receptors; epithelial transport of IgA; regulation of the mucosal IgA system; biological roles of IgA, including newly discovered functions; IgA-associated diseases, and therapeutic applications for IgA. Chapters have been contributed by internationally recognized leaders in the field of IgA research, representing 8 countries on 3 continents. 452 pp. Englisch.

Its application to human disease is nothing less than spectacular. In no other group of disorders has knowledge and clinical utility progressed so speedily. Recall that the organelle was described in just 1955. Since then, the biochemical alterations and storage materials were described, the enzyme deficiencies discovered, the gene coding of these glycoproteins cloned and thousands of mutations defined. These advances have resulted in highly improved diagnosis for more than 50 diseases. For five diseases, including the most common lysosomal storage disorder, molecular therapy is a reality, extremely effective and very safe. This higher plateau of medical approaches to human disease is something to which all translational scientists aspire and only a few actually witness. The relief of pain and suffering is a tribute to the ideas and work of many dedicated investigators. Much of that work is presented in this text. Despite our ability to treat some of these diseases through enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) and, accurately define different diseases that look alike, there is much to be learned about lysosomal disease. With each step up the barrier to knowledge, a new point of view is attained, a fresh perspective. Much is seen more clearly and many 'allegories of the cave' are dispelled forever. Yet, our new view demands a new vision drawing us to find better definitions of what we see. This is how it has been with lysosomal diseases. 584 pp. Englisch.

The emphasis of ISOTT-2006 was on ''Expanding our Horizon. '' In terms of research topics, we added some newer ones - Translational Studies, Tissue Engineering, and Nanobiotechnology. In terms of participants, we put extra effort into including more junior researchers because we felt that they were the future of our society and for the first time in ISOTT history we had presentations made by high school students. In terms of organization, it was truly local, national, and international. The support in organizing ISOTT-2006 came from various directions: We would like to express our special thanks to the University of Louisville (UofL), especially to the UofL Provost Office, Speed School of Engineering, School of Medicine, and the office of the Vice President of Research. UofL's financial support allowed us to supplement the student's registration fees s- stantially and to invite so many excellent distinguished lecturers. It should be noted that none of our invited speakers requested an honorarium - we thank them immensely. I would personally like to thank the Chemical Engineering Department of UofL for allowing me to take time off from my teaching resp- sibility. We appreciate UofL President Ramsey's visit to our dinner held at the Derby Museum. We thank the Case Western Reserve University for having their MIMS Center symposium with us. 436 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -Innate Immunity has long been regarded as the non-specific arm of immune response, acting immediately and in a generic way, to defend the host from infections. In the post genomic era, our knowledge of the innate immune system is enriched by findings on the specificity of innate immune reactions as well as to novel functions that do not strictly correlate with immunological defense and surveillance, immune modulation or inflammation. Several studies indicate that molecules involved in innate immunity exert functions that are either more complex than previously thought, or go well beyond the innate immune character of the system. The advent of high-throughput platforms for genome and proteome-wide profiling, together with the enormous amount of raw genetic information that has accumulated in the databases, have stirred new expectations in biomedical research. They have led scientists to revisit established biological systems from a global and integrative perspective. Innate Immunity research is now faced with the challenge of trying to integrate isolated biochemical pathways into complex gene and protein regulatory circuits. In this respect, scientists from around the world convened at the 4th International Conference on Innate Immunity (June 4 - 9, 2006), in Corfu, Greece to discuss recent advances in this fast evolving field. This volume represents a collection of topics on natural killer cells, mast cells, phagocytes, toll like receptors, complement, host defense in plants and invertebrates, evasion strategies of microorganisms, pathophysiology, protein structures, design of therapeutics, and experimental approaches discussed during the conference.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 460 pp. Englisch.
