The cookery book has an index, the confectionary book has a table of contents. Condition is GOOD ; covers spotted and worn with small slits at the ends of the front joint, and the front joint mostly detached fron spine, holding at the rear. Endpapers have some tears and have tape repairs. Binding of the text remains quite solid however. Paper spine label worn and illegible. Text a bit toned with some very faint water stains, but quite readable. Recipes for gruel, flummery, jugged hare, moss cake, ratafia, acorn bread, etc. RRGR.

Final advertisement page for Parkinson's Confectionary [sic] No 180 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. Contemporary black cloth, neatly rebacked with a replacement paper label. Inserted loose between the two books is a handbill 119x192 mm with recipes for NORMANDY PIPPINS and DRIED PEARS, presumably available for winter use from Parkinson's shop. Signature of E. Thorne Valparaiso 15/4/[18]48 on front pastedown and again at the head of the first title. Internally clean and tight with light toning of the margins of the text block. The two titles first appeared in Philadelphia in 1843 and 1844 respectively. The Complete Cook was reprinted in 1846 and in 1847 and 1851 the two titles were published together. See BITTING p. 355 and 466 for partial citations. The second item may be the first book on confectionery by an American author.
