This is a book club edition from 1957 (published in 1956 in the UK by Rich & Cowan under this title but published by Ace in 1955 under the title Solar Lottery). Bumped at head and tail of spine and also at the top right hand corner of the front and rear board. Age tanning to pages. Foxing to endpapers and half title page. The front pastedown has attached the information about this book from the SF Catalogue (see photo). The dust jacket is complete but somewhat fragile. It is rather grubby, especially the spine, and there is some foxing. It is showing signs of wear to the extremities and is rubbed at the edges, there are several chips and faded/sunned at the top and bottom edges of the flaps. There is a large patch of damage on the front panel (sticker removed?) which has resulted in a tear which has been sympathetically repaired. Creasing to lower edges of the jacket. Dust soiling to top edge of text block. The text is unmarked. Endpapers on either side show faint vertical strips of off-white discoloration (approx. half inch wide). The dust jacket is edge worn and lightly soiled with small chips, tears, and darkening to spine, in a mylar cover. One small, open tear along top edge of front fold. 8vo. 160pp.

Second UK hardback edition of this novel previously published in 1956 by Rich and Cowan. There is a little bumping to the bottom corners of the boards with a little browning to the spine and slight discolouration in places around the edges. Browning to the page edges with a tiny spot to the top edges and another two to the fore edges and the bottom edges. Previous owner's name in pen to the top corner of the front free endpaper and the pages are browned around the edges but otherwise clean and unmarked. The jacket has a little browning to the spine where the volume number is written in pen and there is a one inch closed tear at the top of the front panel. Very slight chipping along the top edges and at the corners but otherwise bright and unmarked. Jacket design by Cecil W. Bacon.

It originally appeared in 1955 under the title Solar Lottery. Set in a world governed by a strange system in which a lottery is used to determine leaders and their assassins. This charming copy is the first thus, published in 1957 by Rich and Cowan's Science Fiction Book Club in London. There is one bruise to the spine and to the cover, but altogether an excellent copy.

A couple of tape residue marks to the front and back boards and both sets of end-papers sympathetically and professionally replaced with matching paper stock. i suspect that, at some stage in its life, this may have been an ex-library copy but there are no library markings inside the book which is otherwise in VG condition although several pages are dog-eared. No D/W.

The dust jacket is bright with minimal shading of the spine colour. Extremities of the cover are neat. no signature.
