This book records a particular moment in the history of the British Parliament, during which the House of Lords debated the Municipal Corporations Bill of 1835. This bill proposed the reform of municipal corporations in England and Wales, and was met with both support and opposition. The author, whose profession is law, examines the key principles of the bill, focusing on its proposed changes to the power and authority of corporate bodies. The author discusses potential implications for the rights and privileges of individuals and institutions, including the transfer of property, the appointment of magistrates, and the potential for abuse of power. The author asserts that this book provides a valuable historical perspective on the evolution of British municipal governance and the ongoing debate over the balance between the power of the Crown and the rights of individuals. This is a handbook of guiding historical narratives and questions associated with images present in Nelson's Pictures of Canadian History Textbook. The black and white images are included with the related narratives and questions. This innovative method of teaching history through reproductions of images of events from Canadian history is emblematic of the educational career of James Elgin Wetherell (1851-1940) who devoted his career to the production of textbooks that devised new ways of introducing material to students. Born in Port Dalhousie, Upper Canada, Wetherell studied classics at University College at the University of Toronto, from which he graduated in 1877. From then he began his career in education, teaching in a variety of locations, before taking on roles as an inspector and educational administrator. In the 1880s he began producing textbooks for the Department of Education, and was the general editor of textbooks for the Department of Education from 1917 to 1924. In 1927 he became the Canadian editor for the Scottish publisher Thomas Nelson & Sons, by whom this book was published. In the introduction to the text, Wetherell argues that "The purpose of the pictures.is to give a more vivd idea of the scene than can readily be conveyed in words" and offers accompanying narratives and guidance for instructors on how best to use the images as a vehicle for teaching history. The illustrations in the work were done by Charles W. Jefferys (1869-1951), an English born Canadian painter, illustrator, writer, and educator. His artistic interests drew him to reproducing the natural landscape of Canada, as well as historical images from Canada's past. He began his career as a newspaper illustrator, before becoming a freelance artist, and teaching in the School of Architecture at the University of Toronto. He is one of the best known artists of images of Canadian historical events, and his images are some of the most reproduced. Charles W. Jefferys (illustrateur).…

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the legal implications of King Charles I granting a charter to the proposed London University, challenging its legality on the grounds that it lacks conformity with the doctrines and practices of the Church of England. The author contends that by law, the monarch, as the head of the Church of England, lacks the authority to establish a university that deviates from established religious principles. Through an exploration of historical precedents and legal statutes, including the Act of Uniformity, the book argues that such an institution would violate the supremacy of the Church of England and breach the religious uniformity mandated by law. Ultimately, the book's analysis highlights the intricate relationship between the monarchy, the church, and the legal framework governing the establishment of universities in England, shedding light on the historical and legal complexities surrounding religious conformity and academic freedom.
