Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The editors of this book boldly proclaim that Eureka is Australia's greatest story and they have gathered together some of our countrys finest historians to prosecute the case. Collectively, they compile a strong argument. In the late 19th century that acute American observer, Mark Twain, called the Ballarat rebellion the finest thing in Australasian history and, like all such milestone moments in any countrys expanding tale, Eureka challenges because of the sheer number of interpretations that have been imposed upon it, both before Twain and after. During the sesquicentenary year of Eureka, 2004, one journalist rightly observed that Eureka is not so much history as many versions of history. The question of who owns the Eureka story is destined never to be answered, but one thing is certain: the superb Charter of Bakery Hill, an irresistible sequence of goldfield events leading to tragedy, a cast of characters drawn straight from a classic novel, violence and murder on an early Sabbath morning in December 1854, and a never-ending aftermath that arguably has had more energy within it in the 20th and 21st centuries than it had in the 19th these extraordinary elements of a grand narrative will forever stimulate the Australian imagination. Eureka: Australias Greatest Story is certain to stoke the fires. The editors of this book boldly proclaim that Eureka is Australia's 'greatest story', and they have gathered together some of our country's finest historians to prosecute the case. Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. 'Headon makes no secret of his love of the club. [his] knowledge of the game and careful research shines from every page.' - Canberra TimesThe Canberra Raiders' spectacular grand final win against the Balmain Tigers in 1989 is widely regarded as Australian Rugby League's greatest ever decider. For a fledgling club this was an extraordinary and unexpected achievement, heralding a sequence of years that produced two more premierships and two near misses. The Raiders' trademark adventurous style of play was welcomed by all lovers of the game. Attacking football was back in vogue.David Headon tells the story of a unique football team that entered the Sydney competition in 1982 with little fanfare and plenty of pessimism, despite the fact that league had been an integral part of communities across the Limestone Plains for nearly a century. From this firm base, the Raiders emerged to make their mark. Absolutely Bleeding Green recounts the big wins and heart-wrenching losses as it follows the players through their Raider careers, revealing how the club was able to build exceptional team spirit, even in difficult times. It includes interviews with players past and present, with coaches and administrators, as well as with families and supporters who are so proud of the distinctive lime green jersey. This paperback edition includes the nail-biting 2019 Grand Final.'This terrific book tells the story of a unique club that changed my life forever, just as the Raiders changed Rugby League forever.' - Mal Meninga, Rugby League Immortal, Canberra Raiders Hall of Fame'Dave Headon's history of the Canberra Raiders explores the club's origins, why it was able to defy the odds and be so successful, so quickly, and how it fought its way through more troubled times. In the process of the highs and lows, a special culture of camaraderie was created. The Raiders family has a big story, and for me it's personal. I'm honoured to be a part of it.' - Ricky Stuart, Rugby League Legend, Canberra Raiders Hall of Fame The story of the Canberra Raiders football club, from the early days of community games, now updated to cover the successful 2019 season and the nail-biting 2019 NRL Grand Final in a brand new chapter. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. David Headon, Federation Press. Lang, Harpur and Deniehy were three of the most outspoken proponents of the Australian Republic in the mid-19th century. Their arguments - concise, powerful and balanced - are as relevant today in current Republican debate as they were then. This edited selection of their prose brings together for the first time articles, speeches and letters which show the political and cultural currents in NSW over three decades of important political change. Paperback.

A description of our secondhand books is not always available. Please contact us if you have a question about this title. Author: Manning Clark Format: Paperback Number of Pages: 216 Alexis de Tocqueville was a political theorist in the 19th century. He argued that an egalitarian society would lead to a concentration of power in the hands of the central government, thus sacrificing liberty for equality. Tocqueville's ideas about democracy interested Manning Clark deeply. Clark undertook intensive research on Tocqueville at Oxford during the war, and completed his MA thesis in 1949 at the University of Melbourne. It is published here for the first time. The book seeks to shed light on: Tocqueville and his ideas, placed in their historical context; Tocqueville's ideas and their relevance in an Australian social/political context; the youthful Clark's Tocqueville thesis and its place in his collected writings; the purported Marxist framework of the thesis as the first of many controversies colouring Clark's writing life; the significance of later controversies about Clark and their links to ideas in the thesis. Manning Clark's The Ideal of Alexis de Tocqueville is a reflective study of Tocqueville's political thought, written in the aftermath of the Second World War and long before Clark became one of Australia's best‑known historians. Clark examines Tocqueville's central concern: how modern democracies can preserve liberty when the drive for equality risks empowering centralised authority.

Paperback small octavo (with flaps), very good condition, minor edgewear. 185 pp. The Masters thesis of the noted Australian historian Manning Clark, published posthumously. Alexis de Tocqueville (1805 - 1859) was one of the greatest political theorists of the 19th century. Reads more like a discussion in political philosophy than a history thesis. His underlying concern was how to ensure that civil liberties and democratic institutions are not used by those opposed to them as stepping-stones to dictatorship.
